I am a recent iPhone buyer and was wondering if the US AT&T data plans are actually unlimited, or is there some hidden limit? Reason being that some websites I log onto have a warning suggesting that I upgrade to an UNLIMITED data plan, however I thought I already had that. Will I suddenly be slammed with fees or is the 30USD per month pay for as much data as I want?

Theoretically, it is fully unlimited. However, AT&T really doesn't want you using more than 5GB a month (which is a massive amount of data).

how do they enforce that?? charge you a bazillion bucks if you go over??

in aust our caps are something like 400mb up to around 2gb.. we dont get "free" at all, have to pay for everything.

The only way to hit the limit would be to tether the phone to a laptop and download movies non-stop.

That's what the limit is for, it IS unlimited for cell phone users. There's no way you could hit the cap just surfing the web. But it helps them stop people who tether and abuse it.

(Note that I say abuse. If you tether and use it reasonably you should still be ok.)

I've heard different amounts for the cap, but it's somewhere between 5 to 7 GB. For comparison, for my first full billing cycle I used about 500 MB of data. There'd be no way to hit that limit using just the phone.

(I did use wi-fi half the time, so if you were on the call network ALL the time you might hit 1-2 GB if you really, really tried. But that would be hard to do.)

Although of course it is technically possible to download movies non-stop just via 3G through iTunes or YouTube. But yes, I think the chances of anyone hitting 5gig a month just via 3G would require some serious effort!

I found similar data usage, on average, over the six months I had my original iPhone
