Hello all, I've created this account, hoping that someone could assist me with this issue. I'm sorry if this isn't the right section, and if not, please move it to the correct one.

Pretty much my scenario is that I have to return an iPhone 6s back over to it's original owner (bought the device online; still had an outstanding balance), but before I do, I want to permanently erase everything, as I did everything from the phone (banking, etc.). So far, I've found some data erasers (Wondershare SafeEraser, iSkysoft Data Eraser), but none of them support 9.1+, just iOS 9. I have two weeks to ship the device, so I'm really hoping someone out there can help me find if there's a way to permanently erase all the data, so that it isn't recoverable by data recovery programs and such.

Thank you.

With that, is the content still recoverable via Data recovery tools? I'm looking for a unrecoverable method.

You can plug your phone into a computer, open itunes, and then hit the "restore" button. That will remove the OS and install a clean, latest version.
To my understanding that is the same as doing it through the iPhone's settings app. But doing it through the computer has been faster for me.

I will give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

On the phone: Settings > General > Reset > "Reset all Content and Settings"

This.

Per Apple (https://www.apple.com/business/docs/iOS_Security_Guide.pdf):

Erase all content and settings

The “Erase all content and settings”
option in Settings obliterates all the keys
in Effaceable Storage, rendering all user data on the device cryptographically inac- cessible. Therefore, it’s an ideal way to be sure all personal information is removed from a device before giving it to somebody else or returning it for service. Important: Do not use the “Erase all content and settings” option until the device has been backed up, as there is no way to recover the erased data.

See the PDF on the details on how data is encrypted on an iOS device.
