Do these companies have access to your photos when you recover them?

That depends. Generally it’s really hard to break iPhone security if yours is locked.

how does the data recovery work? am i handing over my photos to strangers? are they saving it to any of their servers?

Rather than us guessing I recommend you speak to the company in question. There is no procedure written in stone. Every company will have a different internal workflow.

I give you an example.

When an iPhone comes in with water damage and it is not powering on and it is for data recovery only, we fix the device only to the point where it can turn on and data can be read from the NAND by the device.

What I mean is the customer gets the device back in a state where he can backup data themselves. Maybe the other components of the phone like the camera, speakers are bad, or even the display isn’t fully functional and is just working enough to backup the data.

If you had a passcode on it, you are fine.

There are cases when the phone needs a temporary battery or screen for the data recovery to be possible (and the customer doesn’t want to pay for said replacements), in those cases the customers usually bring a flash drive and wait while we transfer the phones contents to the drive.

I was going to download some software to try and retrieve some deleted pictures. I was wondering when the programme retrieves them will it be a breach of privacy. I put a 4 digit passcode on yesterday.

Nobody here can tell what a random software would do with your data. And more than likely such softwares will not be able to retrieve anything.

I hear you Akash. Ive given Joyoshare IOS data recovery tool for Windows an email. You know how long these things sometimes take!
Would like to hear if anyone knows a thing or two about these types of things to help my decision!

Can these tools find data on an iPhone that has been factory reset?

Any such tool available for general public to use would not be able to most likely. iOS is one of the most secure operating systems out there.

If you pay a lot of money to professional data recovery companies then there’s a potential but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Probably correct. Thanks.
