I intend to upgrade to a quad core iMac whenever it releases and I'd like to transfer data from my previous iMac, a G5 whose motherboard is dead. How can this be done? Are there any DIY methods?

Also, in regards to the new quad core mac, are there any risks posed by utilizing two different brands of RAM that have the same specifications? Specifically, I'm considering upgrading to the 8GB deal offered by Macmall.com that I'm assuming uses the standard 4GB of Apple RAM and 4GB of Kingston RAM.

You can buy an external hard drive enclosure and put the HD from the dead iMac to enclosure and then transfer its data with USB or FireWire.

You don't have to use same brand RAM. Many people are mixing brands to get 8GB

don't bother with an enclosure. Go to newegg and look up hard drive dock.

I do appreciate the feedback. I was thinking my problem would require a 600 dollar solution. I'm looking at the dock's right now. Is there any particular dock that is required? What is SATA connection? I hate to be such a laymen here. Many thanks in advance.

A dock that holds SATA and has a USB2.0 or Firewire interface.

G5 uses SATA.

Read the reviews on newegg. The weight of the unit should be enough so a standard hard drive will not cause it to tip over if you bump the desk or something.

This seems to be a good one and affordably priced
