Anyone know if using any one of the above uses a lot of data? I was told they use very little but I'm not sure how reliable that is. Anyone know how to check for sure?

How much data they use, depends on how you use the app. For vehicle navigation with traffic warnings and messages enabled, the data rate will rise.

It's kinda limiting having to be connected to a wifi or cellular network to download a map before you can use it, Possibly my favourite feature of Nokias past was the ability to download maps to the phone for offline use, so it was still an effective sat nav in areas without cellular coverage. Why Apple has yet to implement this seems like a big oversight to me, we can't all live in Silicon Valley with perfect coverage all the time, wherever we go!

There are several iOS apps that can use offline maps.
