"Significantly, the combination of M1, Metal processing, and DaVinci Resolve 17.1 offers up to 5 times better performance when compared to previous generation computers.

Blackmagic Design"

Biggest update of Resolve ever, and its native to M1 already. They claim big improvements with the M1

It was even featured in the M1 event video so not that surprising. It will be great to hear about hands on experiences with 6K BRAW.

Yes, they even mentioned 8K playback without dropping a frame on the Mini. I don't recall they claimed 5 times the performance. Can't wait for some review of the M1 hardware

Me too.

Mac Mini will be a great transition tool for PRO users, including developers and video professionals.

Audio is a bit trick because of equipment and drivers.

The RAM is the big ? here. I usually don't do long edits if I edit (when that happens I've used workstations), but I would love to have a cheap reviewing footage from my Red 8K camera at home

That would probably boil down to what NLE you use but we already know that the Mac mini can work with 8K (ProRes 422 HQ, not RAW) from the footnotes.

  1. Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction Mac mini systems with Apple M1 chip, 16GB RAM, and 2TB SSD. Tested with prerelease Final Cut Pro 10.5 using a 2‑minute project with 8K Apple ProRes 422 HQ media, at 8192x4320 resolution and 23.98 frames per second. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac mini.

But what were the specs of the "previous computers"? Are they talking about the CPU's that they replaced? Because if so that would still be slower than a 16in Core i9 and Geekbench is saying they got results faster than an i9. Or is this just 5x faster GPU?

Why does everyone have to bo so vage about how how much "faster" new mac stuff is. Everyone just keeps posting PR speak instead of useful information.

The specifics for the comparisons Apple makes are given in footnotes. Just look at the main page for the model you're interested in.

There is no Apple Silicon processor that replaces the core i9 yet. Only the low end systems were replaced. The next processors should hopefully have the same level of performance compared to what they replace.

I believe he is referring to the press release from Blackmagic Design, which doesn’t touch on any specifics other than saying Davinci Resolve runs five times faster than on previous generation computers.

Right, and then they make a more general remark about everyone being nothing but vague with PR talk. I'll fix my quote to focus on that part.

Super excited to try resolve on the m1, my only issue is the lack of thunderbolt ports. I am going to use 1 for the display and use the hdmi out to the second display and that only leaves 1 to plug in my T5. I would prefer to have an extra port to have multiple disks to edit from.

Everyone is right that this version of the Apple Mini has significant limitations.

Hopefully next year we will have a more powerful M2 and laptops/desktops with more ports (and probably TB4) alongside 32/64Gb Ram

You can just feel that the space gray Mac mini will return with the SoC destined for the 16” MacBook Pro and base line iMac as well.
