Brand new iPhone 17 ProMax in an Apple TW case with an ESR screensaver. 2 hours post pick up it slipped off the table and hit the pavement. Somehow due to the angle it fell the screen protector cracked, dented/scratched the aluminum case side and scuffed/damaged the case. I think it was a very unlucky fall and not sure how the phone frame got dented and scratched while in the case but it is what it is. Don't think this is something I get AppleCare on as I'm sure they'd say it's cosmetic. The aluminum is definitely a lot softer than titanium in my experience. Sigh.......

While that sucks and I feel your pain, I thought the damage would be MUCH worse. If that happened to me I could definitely deal with that.

Wow. Unfortunate. Though, what happened to you happens a lot. Shouldn’t really end up that bad. Do we all need otterbox defender cases. Crazy

The problem with these cheap single piece Apple cases is they don't have a display lip and are relatively loose. This means when the phone falls, the case can dislodge slightly and expose the chassis.

Two piece cases secure much better. You don't need an Otterbox.

Yes, definitely a bummer considering the phone was only a few hours old. While I do have Apple Care+, based on my experience, this isn't something Apple would cover as they'll likely say it's cosmetic damage only (which would be hard to argue with). Just wish there was a way to swap it out so that I could start over with a more protective case.

Appreciate the comments/feedback.

Ask them. What do you have to lose? The worst they can do is say no. I'm sure they will charge you for a replacement though.

Couldn’t agree more regarding the Apple cases. My personal favorite being their silicone cases but they certainly don’t provide much protection as you rightly mentioned.
What two piece cases did you have in mind ?

For a period of time immediately after release, Apple will do retail exchanges for DOA and user-damaged phones to capture them for EFFA (early field failure analysis).

I’d get to an Apple Store ASAP. IIRC, there’s some set number of EFFA captures per SKU.

This time cracking the camera glass will get you a whole new unibody.
And there is now a logic board replacement option on all 17 versions and the Air, before it was a mid system replacement.

Apple usually wont cover a scratch on the screen or frame. From prior experience (friends and family) if there is a deep gouge and the edges of the phone are sharp to hold Apple has allowed a replacement (you’ll have to pay $100 I believe.)

Can’t hurt to ask at this point? Good luck!

Something like this:

The frame on top prevents the case from receding during a hard fall. Not everyone will like this look however.

Previous Apple genius here. I was going to say something very similar, but I didn’t know the camera glass now gets a full unit replacement. I was going to say something along the lines of crack the screen, but also dent a corner in so much that the screen cannot be replaced. That would warrant a full unit replacement. However, don’t damage the screen so bad that it can’t be used or goes black. Then it requires a depot repair, and you’ll be without your phone for about a week. If you have a back up phone, not really a big deal.

Also, at least when I used to work there a few years ago, within the first week or two of a new model phone coming out the genius bar did not have replacement parts. They would just do full unit swaps until they got parts in.
