Day One 2... any use beyond a diary?

Hey All,

I've seen some of the twitter hype about Day One 2, how well designed it is, etc. I almost bought it purely on hype, as I am want to do from time to time. Then I thought about it... I'm not going to write a daily journal.

Does the app have other uses? What else is it good for? Let me know! Thanks!
 
The v2 hype had me reinstall DayOne (Classic) again - go figure. Anyway, I've started journaling just to see how far it would get me.
DayOne is really conceived around journaling IMHO.
However, v2 lets you create more than one journal. So that could even turn the app into a note taking app. Even more so if your notes are somewhat related to the date/location of their creation, and more than once documented with pictures.

With that said, I'm not going to update for now. I'm fine with the classic version.
 
I have the v1 and have been using it since 2013. The App is really useful for journaling but the question is Is it worth to buy the v2? I didn't notice any major changes for buying the app again. I think they should released v2 with updating the v1.
You should buy the app for the journaling otherwise you don't need to buy it.
 
I also had been few years using Day One and synchronized to Mac.
I like they released version 2 separated from version 1, to keep version 1 stay slim. However, I don't like they pull version 1 from AppStore.

I will stay with v1 as well until they offered really worthed features

The reviews haven't exactly been glowing.... Although most of the complaints revolve around the lack of iCloud support in favor of their own proprietary cloud solution.
 
They pulled Day One "Classic" (renamed from Day One) from the app store when they released Day One 2. NOT a fan. I just purchased the Mac version a few weeks ago so I could sync it all up, and now it's a "well sorry, no more supporting the original, buy the new NEW one for another $25 or $50 if you wait a week".

Also frustrated that the original also never got an iPad Pro resolution update so it's got that hideous overblown keyboard which is bad to type on. I can't get a response from support on whether or not the new iOS version has iPad Pro support but their silence speaks volumes.

Big reason for me not upgrading is that I refuse to use someone else's cloud sync services that can't be anywhere as secure as Dropbox or iCloud. They removed the ability to sync with anything but *their* Day One servers now.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Pulling the old app and completely charging for a new app with a few more features generally incites rage in your userbase and people go look elsewhere.

From the way they've been talking on Twitter it gives the impression they're building towards a subscription of some kind.

Personally I downgraded back to V1 and put in for a refund. Not a fan of the direction they seem to be going in. Such a shame.

I was very surprised to find out that Dropbox syncing was no longer supported. It's worked well enough for me (not perfectly, mind you), and I didn't have a reason to suspect it was going away before I bought the new version for iOS. It was my own mistake for not reading up on the changes first, of course.

Now, someone might ask Apple for a refund in this situation and be done with Day One. I think I'll hold on to it the discount I got, in hopes that Bloom might change their minds about this at some point. I still have Classic, and it still syncs to Dropbox. I'll certainly let them know that I now have no reason to buy the Mac version without Dropbox sync, though.

So you seem to prefer Dropbox sync over iCloud - care to explain why ?

Dropbox was first to market of the two, so it's had more time to become part of my daily routine; it's always worked without a hitch, so I haven't had to look for more reliable alternatives; and it does exactly what I need with other applications I use, so I haven't felt like I needed a service with a more robust set of features or better integration.

To be fair, I'd be satisfied if Bloom brought iCloud syncing back to Day One 2 and it worked at least as well as Dropbox syncing has with Day One Classic. I don't think that's likely, though, since they have ambitions to expand to web and Android.
 
i've been using day one on my mac and iPhone for a few years with icloud sync. i don't want to use another sync service (the new day one 2 service). does day one 2 have any sort of wifi sync between iphone/mac similar to 1password? or will i be limited to mac-only database if I do not enable day one sync?

I didn't buy the Mac DO2 app, but looking at the iOS DO2 app I don't see any options to sync locally between devices.

You are able to create and restore from backups of your entries in the iOS app, as well as send those backups elsewhere via the iOS share sheet (for example to an e-mail address), so theoretically you could use that as a really clumsy sync if the Mac client can restore from an iOS backup (and vice versa). I'm unable to test that, though.
 
I love version 2. I like having a separate journal for life, dreams, and stuff I write. It also allows multiple photos and a lot of other cool odds and ends that just make it nicer... I do wish that they still offers iCloud syncing though.... Hopefully they also add video support

Version 1 is such a great and useful app. I use it daily for personal notes and thoughts and happenings. after a couple of years it is fascinating to look back through. The mac app is especially great with the toolbar icon for quick entry.

However, due to the DO2 implementation of sync with unknown encryption, it is just not worth it for me to upgrade. I'm sure the app is great, it's just the implementation of sync that gives me pause. Even when they implement private key encryption on their sync, I would be concerned.

I'll stick with version one for now and wait and watch v2 development.

I have, and like, Day One Classic. After reading some of the comments, here, I was conflicted about whether I should purchase Day One 2 or not. I read many reviews, elsewhere, and most were positive. That said, rather than wait till the price went up and possibly regret later that I did not purchase it . . . . I decided to purchase it today (before 2/17 caught up with me).

I'm glad I did and glad I made the purchase. I wasn't too thrilled with losing the iCloud sync and still leary about their own sync service. However I do like being able to create different journals. Overall, I'm pleased with everything I see (except losing iCloud sync of course). Time will tell how successful Day One's sync service fares. I kept Day One Classic on my Mac and iPad but deleted it from my iPhone. The migration, of files, from Day One Classic to Day One 2 was seamless and went very well. I was glad that my original files stayed, in tact, on Day One classic after the migration.

Not sure that I would recommend Day One 2 to any one who already owns Day One Classic. That is an individual decision. Now for those who don't have Day One at all; I would definitely recommend Day One 2 (mainly because Classic Day One is no longer available).
