DCHP Invalid I/P Addres from Ethernet Adapter

I recently had Road Runner installed and am using a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 cable modem. I have a wired PC and a wireless PC (both WinXP)connected to a Linksys WRT54G v6 router I am trying to connect a (wired) PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.3.9 (also need OS 9.2.2 to run EPSON Stylus RIP). The PCs work with no problems, but I cannot get the Mac to browse. I removed the router and PCs from the network and connected the ethernet cable from the modem directly to the Mac. I performed all the required power cycles and network setup (in OS X) as suggested by the Road Runner service tech, disabled firewall, etc., but still no connection to the internet.

According the the service tech, the IP address shown under "using DHCP" from the built-in ethernet is invalid and they believe my ethernet adapter is malfunctioning. They have reset the modem and verified the connection to my computer. Network status shows built-in ethernet is active but "may not be able to connect to the internet". The network utility says the ethernet adapter is active, but I cannot ping any outside addresses (Host Down error messages).

I removed the G4 and installed an older iMac with OS X (10.3.4) and it worked fine.

How can I be absolutely sure it is my ethernet adapter or have I confirmed it by installing the iMac? Is a new ethernet adapter expensive? Do most Mac compatible USB ethernet adapters work with OS 9?

I apologize if this information is in a previous thread, but I don't have time to search and I am a newbie to this forum.

a good thing to check is to put the 2 mac togther with a single ethernet cable. and turn sharing on. with apple talk set to ethernet. then you can try to log on to the computers. if everything goes ok then it would seem like the machines are ok. but if y ou cant share then you may have a problem.

AppleTalk Enabling Hangs

Tried to connect the two Macs (G4 and iMac) as suggested. I did not have a crossover cable, so I used a 4 port switch. Connecting the G4 with the iMac yielded no results. I took a second iMac with 9.2.1 and connected it to the switch along with the first iMac rebooted to 9.2.2 from OS X 10.3.4. I was able to get the two connected and verified with the Network Browser in 9.2.1 machine. I had a sudden network error and after rebooting both computers, I cannot get file sharing turned on for the iMac with 9.2.2. It hangs at "File Sharing Starting Up".

The G4, when rebooted to 9.2.2 does the same thing and will not turn on file sharing. Could I have a corrupt extensions that are not allowing file sharing to be turned on?

Should I reload system software?

Any way to reset the system password without reloading software? For the life of me, I cannot remember what I set the iMacs to.

file sharing in os 9 always took a long time. and if i remember correctly then you had to put apple talk on in the control panels or the chooser.. wow it's been so long since i used os9 so i forget pretty easily

when i get to work again i will look up more info


also to remove the password? boot from the install disk.(only in osx) and there is a drop down menu with a reset password option.

Thanks for the effort, but I figured it out. I ran apple hardware test and it showed a ethernet error on the logic board....unet /4/16.
