What format does your disc have? Is it perhaps protected?
Have you tried it with Disk Utility?

OS X Extended. I have tried Disk Utility and I have tried both DD and Disk Utility on different hard drives. Dvd plays fine from the player.

That doesn't mean that it isn't protected. ;-) DVD Player can play DRM-protected media. If it's a commercial DVD then it will likely have some form of protection on it. There isn't anything off about the Terminal command and Disk Utility works too. You might need some specialised software for this.

Tried it with Handbrake too. It works but is terribly pixelated. DVD is UDF format.

Hmmmm....MY DVD and I want to back it up it to MY computer. Go figure....
