Is it possible to deactivate the sms two step verification and just use the two step verification with other devices (like my mac?). I don’t think sms teo step verification is particularly safe (don’t know why apple keeps using it) so I’d like to disable it and just use my macbook air to log in on my phone and vice versa, is this possible? I can’t set it up like this.

If you are asking about Apple's 2FA set up, once you turn it on, you can't turn it off on an established account.
That's correct. However, if you do turn on 2FA, Apple will send an email to you confirming that you have turned it on and offer you the opportunity to turn it off.

This has occurred with my account when my wife inadvertantly turned it on after an iOS update. We were able to turn it off after receiving the email from Apple.

Thanks for the follow-up. That is good information to know.
