I know there have been many posts about battery performance since updating to iOS 5.0.1, some improved, some worse, and others no change, but my battery has been going completely dead when sitting unused overnight.
Woke up this morning to find a dead battery again. My 4GS was working great with 5.0. Good battery life. No problems. Then I updated to 5.0.1. Went to bed with the battery at 98% and woke up to a completely dead battery. Recharged to 100% and the battery seamed OK all day. Just normal drainage with use. Charged back to 100% before going to bed, woke up to find the battery at 97%. Problem solved...Well, not really. Battery was at 83% when I went to bed last night, and again woke up to a completely dead battery.
Now what? Should I do a “Restore” through iTunes? Should I wait for the next iOS update “fix”? Is it possible to go back to IOS 5.0?

I haven’t backed up anything using iCloud. The only backup I’ve done is in iTunes. “iCloud Backup” has always been turned off. I do however have “Contacts”, “Calendars”, “Reminders”, and “Find My iPhone” turned on.
If I don’t restore from backup, how do I get all my apps, music, audiobooks, etc back onto my iPhone:confused:

If those services are turned on in the iCloud settings then you are using iCloud.

I would suggest getting your media from where you originally get the media from. That stuff should also be in your local iTunes library also.

Have you bothered contacting AppleCare?

Why not just leave it plugged in over night. That way you are guaranteed to wake up to a 100% battery.;)

Wasn’t sure how this works. Under iCloud “Storage & Backup”, iCloud Backup is off. Total storage shows 5.0 GB with 5.0 GB available. If I haven’t used any of my iCloud space, then were are the Contacts, Calendars and Reminders stored?

Duh... it never occurred to me. I’m going to go ahead and follow all the Apple online trouble shooting suggestions, and if nothing improves, I’ll give them a call.

With iOS 5.0 I never needed to leave the phone plugged in. Never needed to with my old 3G either. Shouldn’t need to with iOS 5.0.1.

So when do you charge your iPhone, just curious? I always plug my iPhone in next to me while I sleep and the charge usually lasts all day. I just figured charging like that was common practice but then again it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

When I get home each day I open iTunes and download any new podcasts I’ve subscribed to, and also check for and update my apps. Then I plug in my iPhone let it sync, charge back to 100%, then I unplug it. I also keep the Apple phone charger with me throughout the day and recharge whenever the battery gets low, which, with my old 3G used to be 2-3 times a day. When I first got the 4GS I only needed to charge once a day when I got home. Oh, now that I think of it, my phone is always being charged when I’m in my car as I use one of the 2-in-1 Car Charger and AUX Audio Cables which charges the phone and plays audio through the car speakers.

I had the same issue when i installed 5.0.1, i charged my iPhone 4 to full before going to bed at around 11:00am and 9 hours later it was dead without using it at all. Then after reading some Apple discussions i did a hard reset and deleted the settings under 'General/Reset/Reset all Settings' which seems to have fixed the problem, now it can go through the night with using only 1% of battery.

Hope this works for you!

....but with wireless sync you don't have to plug it in. just do all your iTunes stuff and then plug it in next to your bed and in the morning you will have a two for one: sync and charged.

Its hard to tell with all these battery threads what is happening. There would need to be a list of apps installed.

Is the GPS icon on or any of the location services doing something?

There are too many variables than to just say it is draining fast.

You needn't to worry about this problem. Apple will surly find out ways to improve battery performance of its devices....:):apple:

I would recommend a full wipe of the phone and start from scratch. If you still have the problem after that, I'm betting hardware problem.

Did an “Erase all content & settings” on my iPhone yesterday. Then did a “Restore” through iTunes. Once all was completed, disconnected the phone which was reading 100% charge. This was at 517pm. At 1017pm the phone was still showing 99%. 5 hrs with only 1% drop! Looks promising.
Went to bed. Battery at 99%. Today checked the phone at 822am and it was VERY warm to the touch. Turned it on to find the battery down to 23%. Within 1-2 minutes of the phone being on, the phone cooled right down to normal. Guess it’s time to make a call to Apple.:(

Your battery went from 83% to dead in what, 7-8 hours while in standby?

What iPhone do you have? Sounds faulty. There's battery issues with iOS 5, but that sounds like something else..

According to a developer and very high level poster at iPhone forums, you should not "restore" because you will just bring back the possibility of a corrupted file. You should just sync. You will lose some info, but it might be worth it. Read page 18.

Before setting up an appointment, did you Restore from Backup or start from scratch. I know it's a pain but try Erase all comtent & settigns and DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACK UP. Besides if you do end up setting up an appointment on the phone, the guy on the other line is just going to walk you thru the restore process anyways.

Also, leave the darn thing plugged in over night.

Also, it's called the "4s" not the "4Gs"
