I have a Mac Pro 4.1 (Flashed to 5.1) running El Cap and have had my 970 for a little over 3 years. Earlier today I turned on my computer and got black screens on startup (which is normal because it's not flashed) but never received a login screen. I tried an old GTX 680 I have and the computer was still working fine.

I tried the GTX 970 in a PC rig that I have and it didn't get boot screens either. Is it pretty much safe to say that the 970 is dead :( ?

Have you tried updating the web drivers? Sometimes updates break the current version so you have to go in and update them to get rid of the black screen.

Yeah i updated to the latest webdriver on Sierra, sorry i said El Cap in original post. That didn't work so then I tried updating to High Sierra and that didn't work either.

I also noticed there's this kind of clicking sound on the 970 where it looks like the fans want to start and then just stop.

Thanks for the response!

A quick update:

This morning I've been messing around with it some more and the GTX 970 is working intermittently. I used it for about an hour earlier and it seemed to be working fine, but then I shut down the computer and powered it on again about 10 minutes later and I was getting the black screens on startup once again. I've found that restarting will sometimes bring it back but it's not a surefire thing.

Is there anything else I can check which might lead to what the culprit could be?

it's not one of the EVGA cards that got recalled is it?
ops was the GTX 1070 not GTX 970 that had problems

if you can run windows it's worth watching the temps for a bit see if it's to hot, also worth un plunging re pluging in and swapping pci slot + check power cables are ok

but as you checked on a second computer and still have problems :s it sounds bad, any warranty left on the card?
