Dead hard drive

HI,

I am not sure if I am posting this n a right forum but here goes. My Lacie external hard drive died so I took it out of it's enclosure to see if I can connect it using an external IDE to USB adapter. Well, when I opened it up I found two hard drives inside. So, I thought well if one is dead then at lest maybe I can recover data from the other one. But neither drive shows up when I plug it into my Mac Pro. I did look in disk utilities and they don't show up in there either. I am thinking they must be in some RAID or something but how do I find that out? Am I totally screwed?

It is most likely that the two drives will indeed be either a RAID pair or merged to a single volume (say two 1Tb drives appearing as a single 2Tb volume.

The fault is most likely to be with the LaCie disk controller. Is it still under warranty? If so, simply putting the pair of drives back into a replacement LaCie case should be sufficient.

Silly question, but do you have a backup?

The drive is not under warranty. I have another HD just like it. Perhaps I can just take the other one apart and stick these two drives into it.
I don't have a back up but there is noting really THAT important on that drive.

Didn't work. Still says that the disk can't be initialized

Before you give up on them, ask LaCie for technical help. They may know a simple way to recover the data or to work out the actual point of failure.

Worse case scenario - erase and format both drives and try to work out which is the dud.

Another thing to think about - some of the LaCie enclosures use separate controllers for the different interfaces. If, for example, you were using it on FW800, try the USB side (or vice-versa).
