I updated a System HDD running OS 10.7.5 to High Sierra 10.13.X (not sure what update increment). The High Sierra installer identified the 10.7.5 System HDD and installed High Sierra. So no previous OS installs like Sierra, El Capitan, etc. to get to High Sierra. After a short amount of time, the drive failed and no longer mounts. Additionally there are clicking noises. I've attached a link below showing the read/write head pivoting back and forth. I'm almost afraid to ask, but would be interested in a prognosis.

For reference, the HDD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, 1.5 TB (ST31500341AS)

Thanks!

That is a twelve year old drive - far past its "use by" date.

OS updates do a lot of IO to a drive, and it's not unusual for a marginal drive to fail during an update.

Get a new drive, and restore from the backup that you took before starting the update.

In my experience, it's a miracle you got more than initial usage out of these drives. I had 3 at one point. All failed, and they sent refurb replacements for warranty replacement. I used them for one-way data transfers.
