Hey guys,

Friend just bought a used iMac 20" (aluminium) that was working for a day and has since died.

I can't get it to boot from my Leopard DVD (full install). Holding opt brings up the menu with just the DVD (did bring up 'Macintosh HD' but has since disappeared) but clicking the DVD causes it to simply reboot to the grey screen, no logo, nothing.

Holding C/D does the same.

Holding opt+cmd+shift+backspace brings up the apple logo and the spinning gear but never boots from the DVD.

Holding S boots into single user mode and fires the following errors:
Failed to issue COM RESET successfully after 3 attempts. Failing...
and then
AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0x4079c00, 2 -> 1) timed out after (some number i forget)

This coupled with the fact that the HD has been removed from the boot volume screen, leads me to believe that the harddrive has failed and is not spinning up. Setpowerstate fail i imagine means that the disk won't spin up.

-- Case in point, can't really afford to send it in for repair. might still be covered by applecare but if it is, would that extend to my friend given it has now been sold?

Otherwise, does anyone know how difficult it is to replace the disk or whether this is the problem? I had a quick look on ifixit and gather you need suction cups to get the screen off etc.

Also, will any 3.5" SATA disk do? Will it need formatting to HFS first? etc.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated, he's only just bought the thing and is obviously despondent given it has already died and he really can't afford to send it in to be repaired given he's just shelled out £550 for the box.

Thanks,

You should be able to check the warranty status, via the serial number, on Apple's service website, Apple Care goes with the device, not the owner;

A 3.5" SATA form factor drive will be fine; partition and formatting can be done via the OS DVD.

Cheers man, wasn't aware that the warranty was associated with the dvice and not the user.

Turns out it's in warranty so will book in at the GB and get the HDD replace.

Thanks again,

Digipencil :D
