I recently had the time to look at my sisters imac G5, PowerPC processor.
The apple genusis looked at the machine about 6 months ago, said the logic board was dead. I looked at it and discovered a couple of severely bulging caps. I've read the forums postings on this and related issues. By most accounts, the PS and the logic board have design and implementation flaws, which makes me hesitant to just replace all the caps, or even buy a new/used MB.

So, some questions:
1) is the intel based core solo logic boards a 'drop in' replacement for the PPC based logic boards? If so, what is the part number? and source?

2) The current board is a 1.6GHz PPC. Are there other versions of the PPC based logic boards (e.g. 1.8 GHz or higher) that can 'drop into' this machine?

3) Any suggestions on cost-effective ways to turn this into a usable machine?

Apple really screwed the dog in the hw design and implementation of this unit....
Thanks
J

You can not upgrade it to Intel. You can drop in any other iMac G5 logic board from the same size display NON-iSight model.

i make it easy , no you cant pop in a intel board and

the only one that fits is the 1.6 or 1.8 ppc board for a 17" , but they cost a fortune (for the same price you get about a used intel iMac from a shop )and refurbished ones are nearly non existent

the repair cost around £170 at a repair shop that knows what they are doing and apple certified please, so they can test the iMac before returning it
all capacitors need to be replaced , then its fine for the next years to come

cost effective is getting a soldering iron some desolder pump and DIY as the capacitors cost about £15 all together in a set, or if you got a mate who can solder , i mean someone who not only knows how a soldering iron looks like , but also knows how to use it

I've been using many soldering tools for the last 30 yrs....no problem there.

So is anyone selling a 'rework kit' that contains all the likely caps and other parts that can go wrong? Where to buy?
Thanks

replaced the full set as he recommended and it's working fine - soak tested it for a few days - no shutdowns.

have taken it all apart again as i have a few things in mind now that it's working.

am based on uk and didn't pay any import duty/tax.
