Dead Mac Pro Memory...

The past couple weeks my Mac Pro has been having problems waking up from sleep. It would also crash when encoding anything longer than 1 hour with Compressor. I didn't know what to think until yesterday when only 1 GB of RAM showed up in the OS instead of the 2 GBs installed!

I popped off the side and one of the RAM lights was red. After switching the modules around to different sockets I knew it was the module.

Took it to the Apple store and they will be replacing the module.


Has anyone else had an Apple module die on them?

It has been my experience that memory is generally one of the most reliable computer components. Usually, if they fail, they do so immediately (not always of course). That is pretty incredible when you think about it. I remember pressing banks of 16K drams and thought the 1MB SIMM was a godsend. Now we have 2 GB MM's. If automobiles evolved as fast as computers, we would be flying around like the Jetsons.

Apple does not make their own memory, nor do most of the other computer manufacturers. Virtually all of it is made off-shore. The quality control is usually excellent and failures are rare. Bad luck you received a bad one, but happy to see it is quickly being taken care of.

I have 4 x 512mb sticks from Apple. They were one of the BTO choices, so they were installed correctly. They worked fine for almost a month before I started noticing issues.

Maybe there was an issue at the very begining but I never pushed it enough to get to that one spot on the module. Who knows...

I will be picking up the replacement one this week. If they don't insist on getting the broken one back I'll take it apart.
