Yup - the card is on its way out. You should really have used this time to source a replacement. Still, now you know that it is dying but hopefully you can squeeze a few more weeks out of it while you shop.

I picked up another one, this was in a 3rd machine. Oh well, fun while it lasted I guess :)

I get a kick of of solutions like this, I mean who was the first one to think, "hmmm, maybe if I put it in the oven!...."

what is the cheapest working card I can get for my 3rd machine (efi boot screens do not matter to me) that will work with 10.6.8 and no extra kexts etc?

Depends what level of performance you need.

don't need much - it's just a slave that i occasionally need to access w/o using screenshare.

what's a "570" card?

sorry, completely out of my depth here, never been a 3d guy.

if you guys have links to known working cards for 10.6.8 (newegg?) that'd be superb! thanks a bunch.

I don't think an unflashed 5770 will work under Snow Leopard. I know a correctly flashed one will but I think you need Lion for a vanilla PC card.

I've got a PC 5870 reference board on the way so I'll try it in my Snow Leopard box before I flash it and let you know.

Well, the unflashed, reference board ATI HD5870 worked in my Mac Pro 2,1 under a fairly fresh install of Snow Leopard.

I saw a boot screen using a DVI/VGA adapter and it was identified as a Radeon 5000 in system profiler.

You should check the compatibility of your prospective purchase here, but it looks like you're good to go.
