It's not 100% sure but dead ones are usually black and stuck ones are red, green, blue and so on.

I had one stuck pixel and sent it back to Apple (I had 14 days of returning time left) and got replacement. That was even worse, 1 dead and 4 stuck ones.

Where did you buy it? If you can, change it.

We got it a while ago (definitely less than a year), from JB. It is definitely a dead pixel. I don't seem to have good luck with screens. First my DS had a dead pixel, then my iPod Touch, now the iMac.

If you've had it for almost a year then it surely can't be bothering you that much?
And if it has only recently developed, well that is old hardware for you…
;)

Call to AppleCare and ask what they can do. Usually they do nothing if you have less than 5 dead/stuck pixels and none of those are in centre of screen. Dead pixels are very annoying. I'm sending this back to Apple later on today.

Sorry to hear that :(

I think sending an iMac back for a single stuck pixel was a bad move on your part mate, not meaning to rub it in or anything. Stuck pixels can very often be unstuck, and there's even a Dashboard Widget for OS X that rapidly flashes red/green/blue for "unsticking" stuck pixels.

Everyone, quite rightly, wants to receive a perfect screen but the nature of the technology is that stuck or dead pixels are reality that exist regardless of how much care is taken. Apple merely purchase the display panels and send them to be put into their product, meaning they have even less control over the dead pixel situation.

As it turns out you send back a stuck pixel and ended up with more stuck and even a dead pixel. Personally, I'd have persevered with the stuck pixel until it eventually unstuck, even using the widget I mentioned to help it on it's way.

Display manufacturers have thresholds, many of which will point blank refuse to exchange a display with stuck or dead pixels within "reasonable" limits. Sony are the worst for this, as noted with not only their Bravia series but the PSP's screen also. Unless it's like snow, they don't want to know.

I tried that stuck pixel fixer thing but didn't help (I ran that overnight). It's easy to exchange here because here is no restocking fee. I hope that the next one will be stuck/dead pixel free...

Fair enough mate, at least you tried.

I know how annoying these things can be though. I paid £550 for a PSP when they first came out in Japan, bought it in a UK import store along with Ridge Racers, it had a dead pixel top right, just off centre, and two stuck pixels on the left side of the screen.

The importer wouldn't exchange it, but he also said that would have been Sony's policy had it been bought in Japan itself or had it been a UK model.

It's a grey area in LCD/Plasma technology, and some manufacturers are stricter than others. Apple probably exchange without any questions simply because it's not their panels in the computer and the "fault" is down to LG or whoever they purchased the panels from.

It is up the top right, right now right up top of the address bar in Safari, so it definitely isn't in the way. I have that dashboard widget, but it wouldn't fix my pixel would it?

At least it won't hurt but dead pixels can't usually be fixed. Try it
