Looks like I have 2 dead pixels not stuck pixels after all. See my other thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/343242/. Thanks to those who pointed me to the pixel exerciser but after reading the instructions it seems to be either a dead pixel or dust trapped in the screen. :(

One point is down in the bottom left of the screen and not really an issue, but the other is right in the middle of the screen.

It could be dust stuck in the screen (as it looks more red on a white screen) but its not a stuck pixel as on a black screen it disappears altogether.

Not sure if I should just ignore it or send the imac back. 90% of the time I have to look for it to find it but every now and then its noticeable.

I want to keep this machine for a long time so sending it back might make sense but also getting it was such a pain, and if I send it back should I just give up and wait for leopard.

Dead pixels? Where on the screen?

I say dead are ok to live with especially if it's a BTO, stuck pixels are a different story seeing that you could see a red dot in a movie, white doc, etc..

You're in the UK so if you purchased it online or mail order you have 14 days to return it for whatever reason. I sent my imac back because I didn't like the glossy screen. There is a £60 charge to do this but apple said they would pay it. I think this was because I mentioned I was looking at a mac pro and cinema display instead!

You have a class II screen in your iMac and two pixels are few enough for Apple not to replace. The notorious "within spec" argument.

However, the rule of thumb, though not in law, is that the dead pixels should not be too obtrusive. In the corners or the edges is fine. Smack in the middle and thus field of view is not. If it is very noticeable and bothers you, try returning it. Be polite but firm and do not lose your temper.

from my understanding Apple does not cover dead pixels. If it is within the 14 days you could return it. Do they bug you? I know dead pixels bug the crap out of me and I have sold monitors before because of it. If it doesn't really bother you I won't worry about it .

The one over in the corner is no bother at all, its just the one in the middle of the screen.

I will give it a few more days and try to ignore it, I have "lost" it a few times and had to search for it again so it can't be that bad. Starting to think i will keep the mac and just ignore the one that annoys me ... its not an issue on DVDs or any full screen work. Could well be dust as that seems to fit more with the change of colour depending on if i have a white or black screen.

If it really bothers me I will have a go at returning it. Thanks for the advice. :)

My 20 inch was BTO and had 2 bad pixels in the center. I was told that I could take it to the Apple Store and have genius look at it, and if I still wasn't comfortable with the position of the burned pixel, that I could get it fixed. I ended up just exchanging it for a 24 inch BTO. So apple sent me some shipping labels and the computer has already been sent back. Now I'm waiting on the 24 inch. I am only charged the difference.

They were very nice to me over the phone. I wasn't mean and they were real helpful. Although I did get the "well, this happens with the LCD technology" and "apple allows a certain amount" but an amount wasn't given.

Hope this helps.

you could always dispute the charge on your credit card and say that the delivered goods were not as described...

I've got a dust-in-screen issue with my new (Mid2007) 20" iMac:

http://pimz.com/pub/pluis.jpg

It's the best picture I could take, but with a magnifying glass it's much easier to see that it's actually a small dust particle, while just eyeballing it, it looks like two or three dead pixels next to eachother.
The Apple support rep said I could have the Mac swapped or repaired (he couldn't find any other cases in his database). Not sure what I'll do yet, the iMac is only used as a secondary screen.

personally i now wont buy an apple product unless i have seen it working instore. i dont mind paying for it and then going through several different machines to get a good one. But if i have to pay good money for a computer it better work properly, and dead pixels means a defective unit.

i have a MBP 17inch first version and the screen is shocking for the money and supposedly been a "pro" machine.

id imagine alot of dead pixel screens find there way into the custom orders off apples website, due to higher difficulty of returning the computer.
