Dead pixels

Just how common are dead pixels in Apple products? Out of the 4 computers I've received from them (PowerBook G4, MacBook Core Duo, iMac Core 2 Duo), I've had at least one dead pixels. I haven't heard of anyone I know getting a dead pixel, so do I just have bad luck, or am I not alone?


Also, is it true you need more than 6 dead pixels to get your display replaced?

I've only had dead pixels on one display - the original one I got on this MBP. The replacement has none. I don't think the 6-pixel requirement is hard and fast - mine was replaced with just one, but also a number of "grey" spots. 6 or more will almost undoubtedly get you a replacement, but fewer could, depending on your politeness and the niceness of the Apple rep you talk to.

I'm not too sure. I have a 50% rate of dead/stuck pixels since I've only owned two Macs to date. My MB has none, while my 20" iMac has one stuck pixel. Not a big deal though. I'm not sure if many other people have stuck/dead pixels. It seems like you are more likely to hear from those who do have them than those who do not. So yeah, the replies might be a bit biased.

I have had 2 mac, iMac G5 and an iMac Core 2 duo. No problems
My housemate 4 macs, iMac G5, iBook G4, Macbook, iMac Core 2 duo. No problems.
All of my friends, 3 Powerbook G4 1.67 Ghz, 3 iBook G4s, iBook G3, iMac G3, eMac G4, iMac Core 2 Duo and their uni 20 iMac Core Duo and 8 ACD all of which i have had a decent amount of contact time with. No Problems.

In Total:44 screens no problems*.

*(I did take delivery of an iMac Cor 2 Duo which had a really dark grey patch in the middle of the screen, it looked like damage in transit and was replaced no questions)

If you have stuck pixels in the middle of the screen I'd say you have a pretty high chance of getting a replacement screen (or machine).

Umm... a dead pixel by definition is a pixel that is not lit, and thus appears black (no light = more absorbance = no reflection). A pixel that is red, green or blue all the time is considered "stuck."
Have you tried massaging it out? Or maybe running one of those java-based unsticking programs for a day or so?
I'd say the chances of getting Apple to do anything about it are slim to none, but then again if you don't try, you'll never know. I had a Genius replace my entire display in my MBP over one dead pixel. Just be nice and persistent. But do give the massage thing a chance. You could get lucky.

Before you try massaging try Pixel Fix, and then try speaking with Apple. They are safer. After that you can try massage, which does work some percent of the time, but you need to be careful. Good luck.

Dead/stuck pixels happen -- nobody's figured out a cost-effective way to manufacture screens otherwise. I guess it's just luck as to who gets units with them. Apple buys their screens from the same manufacturers that other laptop-makers use, so I would imagine that they have the same % of bunked up LCD screens floating around. I just wish that Apple was like Dell and would replace any screen that the customer didn't like -- no questions asked.
