Dead portion of the touch screen :(

I was walking with my 2G Iphone in my hand, when someone bumped me, and the phone flew, and landed harshly. Now the dock portion of the screen (Lower part) isn't responsive. What do I need to buy to repair it? the LCD Screen? or what? The rest of the screen is working flawlessly, it's just the bottom portion that's not working, and the screen is not cracked or anything, just unresponsive. What part do I need to buy to repair it?

Sadly it sounds as if the multi touch layer below the screen has been damaged or knocked slightly out of place. Which means that you would have to send it off to apple to repair, because its next to impossible to get your hands on the technology to repair it yourself.

Have you tried a restart of your iPod? That does occasionally fix strange problems such as this.

Unfortunately I did, and nothing happened And the problem with sending it to Apple is that I never used it with AT&T, so I can't send it activated without it being unlocked

You can get parts from places like ifixit and replace it yourself.

ahh the infamous "dead strip"
i had one once

its a problem apple knows exists, and are more than willing to replace phones for free no questions asked

of course, the being unlocked part may be a problem
if it was unlocked in a way that you could relock it just do that, i don't know much about unlocking
just jailbreaking

Will they replace it if it is out of warranty?

In the first generation phone the screen and the LCD/touch part were al glued together (in essence). So you would need the entire display assembly.

Unfortunately, I don't see the part on ifixit. You could email them and ask about it.
