Hi. Writing this in the iMac forum because that's the computer that 'caused' the problem. I have a 2011 iMac and some years ago added a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD under the ODD and set it up as a home-brew fusion drive with the 2TB HDD. Then, more recently, I removed the HDD and replaced it with a 2TB SSD, with the OS and all my files on it. I left the old SSD in place but it wasn't being used.

The other day I noticed that I couldn't see the 256GB SSD in disk utility, and checking using the Terminal command 'diskutil list' (both while logged in normally and booted into Recovery) also revealed nothing. Next, I removed the SSD and put it in a caddy, but there was still no sign of it, using both the iMac and a Macbook Pro. Other disks show up fine when mounted in the caddy, so that works, and the larger SSD works internally in the iMac when attached to the SATA cable that the old one was using.

So, the obvious conclusion is that the SSD has simply died, but that seems odd seeing as it wasn't being used at all. Anyway, I was just wondering if there is anything I could try beyond what I've done already to know for sure whether the drive is really kaput.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your loss, but the 840 era was the last of Samsung's planar (2D) NAND. As cells shrink smaller and smaller endurance went down, until it made a debacle. You see, it still lasted you many years, but the 850 generation saw the dawn of 3D NAND, with bigger cells which restored endurance. We still use that today.

I was a bit perplexed... Did you do a Time Machine backup of your 256GB SSD + 2TB HDD, and then restored to your new 2TB SSD alone?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I restored via TM to the 2TB SSD. That was 2-3 years ago and everything has been fine. As far I remember I then formatted the 256GB SSD and it was visible in Disk Utility back then, but seems to have died in the meantime.
