Trying to figure out if a decent deal. Base 2009 MP 2.66 quad. no extras - 3gb ram, 640 drive. Price is 1750 + tax. Thoughts? How upgradeable is it? The other option is a 2010 refurb for over 2100.

Depends on your needs, I would do it just for the GPU alone, ntm the standard HDD and stronger proc depending on the model.

I'd take to 2009 model and replace the CPU with a Xeon W3565. Much better value. Unless you absolutely need the Radeon GPU.

is there a thread on how to do this for 2009 models? I have seen the thread for 2010 models. Is the 3565 the best proc that will fit?

It's exactly the same procedure for the 2009 model. The SP daughter boards are identical.

That's NO "deal" ........ not by a long shot.

2010 base refurb would be a MUCH better "deal".

cheers

Best deal would be a w3580 3.33 processor which can now be had for under 500 dollars.. I sold that for the younger brother the w3680 which is the same clock speed but is based on the Westmere architecture + its 6-core.

Why? They are pretty much the same except for the Radeon.

For $1750 + $300 you get 3.2 GHz (W3565), that is the 2010 quad upgrade which Apple retails for $2899.

The 2010 base refurb is a 2.8GHz (W3530) for $2100+

I know where I'd put my money...

Best deal would be a w3580 3.33 processor which can now be had for under 500 dollars..

Are you sure? I can't find it for that price. But if so, then yes...

Try ebay..

OK, how does that work with QPI? You just drop in the 1333 dimms and it changes speed automatically? And are 1333 dimms required for the W3580? I figured it used 1066 memory as it was the top-tier single processor model in 2009.

it is compatible w/ 2010/2009 mac pros.. just be sure to get 1333 mhz mem if its a replacement for the slower 2009 mac pro processors.

Ram only runs at 1066 MHz on 2009 Pros. Even if it is 1333 MHz ram. So why does he need it? Your comments are misleading at times

In case he wants to get one of the faster proc's that do run at 1333 (hex core)

The 2010 refurb is a much better deal. For $300 more you get the following:

Much faster video card with more output ports and twice the RAM
Audio out from the MDP ports
Faster CPU
Faster Memory
Wi-fi card
Bigger hard drive
Better CPU upgrade path (Westmeres and Hexacores)

The video card alone is almost worth that price difference.

the issue always is the same... how is the hexacore upgrade path worthwhile if so few programs use multiple cores??? hmmmm. tough choice

Really? Even disregarding CPU upgrade path, the other six things on the list are pretty compelling for $300.

Also, if you're getting a used 2009, Applecare is likely expired. With the refurb you have the full 1 year.

I am new to this forum and overall new to contacting people through forums. I am trying to get in touch with Joshuarocks as he offered in another thread and I see that this is the last thread he posted to. If he is reading this then please contact me. It is about your post on a diagnostic program you mentioned.
