Hello,

I would like opinions on what you think about the Late 2015 Imac 5k with 8 GB of ram and a 2 TB Fusion Drive vs Imac 5k 2017 8 gb of ram and 1 TB Fusion dr. I am debating because the new one has thunderbolt 3 and is that even a necessity, the price I found online new are about a $200 difference. Can anyone give me clarification as to if I should upgrade, thanks!

hold it....

one of the most important parts of an imac 5k is the video card. And some video cards are significantly more powerful than others.

which video cards are associated with each configuration?

I did a bit of a research the new one has 4GB of video card and the Late 2015 5k has 2GB, the 1TB Fusion states a 32GB Flash

the late 2015 27 inch imac comes with one of the following video cards:

M380, M390, M395

and not the M395X, which has 4GB of VRAM

the late 2017 27 inch imac comes with one of the following video cards
570, 575
and not the 580 which has 8 GB

so... let's look at Geekbench compute:

m380: 48993
m390: 67957
m395: 77576
570: 86422
575: 106072

so if games, or the sort of media applications that use opencl interest you, the 2017 macs are the better buy...

plus, there's the whole issue with h.265 10 bit acceleration.

thank you for that info, what about thunderbolt 3 is thunderbolt 2 will it still affect the price of the Imac 5k in the next few years?

I'm absolutely new to imacs, in fact i don't even have mine delivered yet so I may be wrong but are you saying the late 2017 imacs do NOT have the 580 vcard option.
I believe you are mistaken if that is what you are saying, I just purchased one with that option.

sure, you can opt for the 580, and if you want to play AAA games on your imac, there's no such thing as too much gpu power (short of an eGPU and all that entails)
However, you said that you were looking at a 2017 with a 4 GB graphics card and a 2015 with a 2GB graphics card; I assumed that you had two specific models in mind that fit your budget.
