I really think I could utilize the Stage Manager feature coming in iPadOS 16 to M1 iPads to help with my productivity. Thinking if I do update to an M1 (I would purchase a used one), now would be the time to sell my current 11” iPad Pro to get the max value from it since it will surely depreciate further once the rumored 11” M2 iPad Pro is released. And assuming the 11” M2 iPad Pro is released soon, a brand new one is not in my budget.

Anyone else thinking of upgrading to an M1 Pro from a non M1 iPad in order use the new features in iPadOS 16? Also, on a related note, aside from EBay and Swappa, are there any other decent places online to buy/sell used iPads? Thanks!

If it wouldn’t cost you much to do the upgrade, sounds like swapping for a used M1 iPP is a good way to go.

FB Marketplace?
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve looked on there but it’s SO full of scammers it’s ridiculous!

It looks like we’re closer than ever, but it also feels like we’re still generations away from Apple offering software that matches the hardware.

Im very tempted to go from Pro(2020) to Pro M1. But (to me) this seems to be the same “upgrade-tease” cycle. Mouse support. File system. Magic Keyboard. USB-C drive compatibility. RAM increase. M1 chip. We have the components for making this the “Pro Powerhouse” that it should be, but in the end the software is still missing. So I’m going to try my best in resisting an upgrade.

As long as your current iPads still serves your needs well (at least within current limitations), then might as well wait until the next iteration has the features (both hardware and software) that you want.

I stayed on the 2017 Pro for 4 years. There weren’t enough improvements in the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pros for me to warrant a ~$2K upgrade.

No, I would wait until fall for a potential M2 11" iPad Pro; that is what I am doing.
I would as well at this point. The stage manager and other features won't go live until September anyway most likely

And there's always the chance of a Mini LED screen (although the rumours are saying possibly not).
if the 11 Pro goes Mini LED though expect a price increase

If that is a feature you want/need, go for it. I upgraded to the 2020 pro for features my 10.5 didn’t have. Now I’m not upgrading because it works fine and I don’t need/want any of the new stuff my 2020 won’t get.

You don’t have much to lose by waiting, because the discounts on the M1 would be better. There might or might not be an M2 coming this year too, and you could think, why even get M2 when M1 is so powerful and the software still hasn’t caught up yet? Well, it buys you probably one more year of future proofing.

It first and foremost depends upon your financial position. If you can financially afford to do it and you want to do it, sure go for it. But it sounds like you're at the upper limit of what would be financially feasible if a brand new hypothetical M2 Pro is not in your budget.

If you want to take a more considered approach, then I recommend keeping your current iPad. You've already made a significant investment in the 2020 11" iPad Pro. Wait to see how Stage Manager plays out. There are going to be hiccups and stumbles and Apple will iron out those kinks... just in time for the M2 iPads to arrive.

It is also possible that the M1 chip will make its way down the product line and you find that you can get that capability at a later date at a less expensive price point.

FOMO (fear of missing out) is always greatest in the days following WWDC. It causes people to make decisions that they wouldn't otherwise make. If you wait a month or so and you're still antsy (like the feeling of ants crawling all over you) then go ahead and make the move. But I suspect that after that time, the FOMO fever breaks and you continue to enjoy the device you have.

Well, the M1 chip has moved down the product line… it moved to the iPad Air. @Rory76 doesn’t necessarily have to go with the iPad Pro… but a used 5th generation iPad Air can be an option as well.

There’s not going to be a lot of used Air 5s for now. That said, I’ve seen them for $559/64GB and $679/256GB brand new at Walmart.

As long as you ensure you get at least a 256GB M1, you will get the bulk of the features and get everything on a M1 iPad Pro 12inch, going by this breakdow:
