Decision on iMac

im in the same boat! im choosing between the same choices, mainly photoshop for wife's photo business.
 
Really they're all priced quite closely together that your choice shouldn't really matter much. I say get the most you can buy.

I edit and paint large resolution files on my i7 iMac for photoshop. Photoshop itself doesn't utilize near all of the i7 lynnfield, nor will it utilize near all of the i5 lynnfield. Your bottlenecks will be ram and hdd/sdd.
 
how to add RAM? is that something i can do it myself or i have to send it back to Apple to do it?
 
You can do it yourself. It's literally just removing 3 phillips head screws connecting a panel on the underside of the iMac, then just sticking your ram modules in.

What about an i3? and does CS5 utilize the graphics cards to their max? reason being, if the i3 27inch isnt maxed by CS5 I could save some money.
 
Not much. All iMacs have a discrete graphics card so any will do. Some programs tend to like a lot of vram, but those are usually 3d programs like autocad.
 
FYI, I just installed CS5 on my 13" aluminum macbook, 2ghz core2duo, 2mb ram and non-discrete graphics and it actually runs just fine, so I am assuming it will more than cruz on any 27" imac. that being said, photoshop on a 13" macbook is not really that fun to work with........

so what's the difference that different graphic cards and vram make???

What's the real life difference between core2duo and quad core??? Under what kind of circumstances or task will it make a difference?

Given the same price, would you go for Quad Core i5 with 1GB vram or Quad Core i7 with 0.5 GB vram?
