Yeah the tendency on this forum to bash the 12.9” iPad as “not portable” makes me laugh a little every time I see it. When I was in college 10 years ago, I had a 15” PowerBook G4 which weighed in at 5.7 lbs. I considered that to be portable and lugged it back and forth on the 10-15 min walk to class daily. I also carried textbooks and a notebook since you couldn’t hand write on a laptop back then and I dislike typing my notes. All in, my backpack probably weighed 15ish lbs. I would have absolutely killed to have a device that combined my laptop, notebook, and textbooks in a package that weighed 1.4 lbs (or 2.5 lbs with the keyboard attached). The notion that a 2.5 lb device isn’t portable is just silly. You can definitely make a case that the 11” model is easier to manage when holding it. But both are portable devices.
I didn’t say everyone else should get the 12.9” model. What I did say was that claims that the 11” is portable while the 12.9” is not strike me as a bit over the top. Which model you choose is solely based on personal preference (which is why Apple makes two sizes). But, both are portable devices.Just because you like carrying around a 12.9 iPad doesn't mean everyone else should. I found the 12.9 unwieldy for lap usage and I would much rather travel with the 11 I exchanged it for.
I tried both and used them extensively. The 12.9" won because of all of that screen real estate. Before this, I'd used the 10.5 and 9.7. I love this big screen even when using it in my lap. It's not too big carrying, either: it's no more cumbersome, to me, than carrying an 8.5 x 11" notepad. I love taking notes on this thing.
All that said, it was a difficult decision, and I understand why others would choose the 11".
I guess everyone is completely different! I found the 11” too small for my lap, didn’t balance, awkward, etc. I am so glad I went back to the 12.9! A pure joy! And can hardly tell its in my messenger bag... there is just simply something about the larger screen for doing meaningful work...Just because you like carrying around a 12.9 iPad doesn't mean everyone else should. I have had both, both are portable... bottom line.. in fact I had someone ask me if the 12.9 yesterday was the small one! LOL... at the cafe..I didn’t say everyone else should get the 12.9” model.
