As much of a Apple fan I am, I've never really understood the specifications such as:

1.1GHz dual-core 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor

I've bought the MBA 2020 because it was the cheapest - when I showed it to my brother, he said that he would have personally bought the 'i5' which again I have no idea what that means and a friend said 'you only need base one'.

Again, I have no clue what this lingo means but would like to going forward so I know exactly what I'm buying, can someone translate?

Alternatively, is there anything that would explain specifications in detail?

You just need to start learning about technology in general. Even kettles for boiling water have different specifications, let alone MacBooks.

Here is an article that explains a bit about the different Intel chips used.

In the simplest terms, the i3 is the slowest and for basic use. i5 is faster for more demanding users, then the i7 the most powerful.

How do you plan to use the new MacBook? If all you are doing is some basic word processing and web browsing the base model i3 you bought will be just fine.

Yeah, I don't use my MacBook for anything other than online shopping, sending out emails and/or using it to do some work on Word/Excel for work.
