Any way to ensure that created appointments have an alert by default? (iOs 5, iPhone 4).

Typically I am creating events in Google calendar (which has its own sms/email reminder mechanism), these get synced with the iPhone via Google's Exchange server, but then I have to manually add reminders on the iPhone which I frequently forget to do.

There is a setting for alerts by default, but I don't know if that only applies to events created on the phone itself.

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Default Alert Times

If you go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars and scroll down to the Calendars section, there is an option for "Default Alert Times".
