Defective keyboard on my imac?

I don't know if I have a faulty keyboard or not, but what's happening with it lately is very strange.

I've only had the computer for a week or so and the last couple days when put it in sleep for the night and put it back on the next day to use, the CAPS LOCK button doesn't light up. The keyboard types fine but the caps lock won't turn on for nothing.

Then i'll restart the computer and it will light up again. I've had to do this 3 days in a row. Then I'll turn off the keyboard and go to system preferences the the imac doesn't even detect the keyboard when I turned it off. It just keeps searching and searching, and I have to end up restarting the computer again for the keyboard to be detected without a problem.

I would definitely say it is defective if you are having that problem with it. I have had 3 replaced in the last two months. The first one the top row of letters did not work, the second one the bottom row including command, option, control. Each time they gave me a new keyboard but each time same problem. The last time I went into the apple store the genius there took one from the retail box and opened it and handed it to me. This one has been working fine with no issues. Also noticed the first two would drain the battery with in a week it would be down to 60%. The new keyboard is still at 100%.

I bought my imac from the apple online store. So I don't know how exchanges would work with having a defective product.

I'm willing to give it another day or 2, and if this problem keeps happening I'm going to have to call applecare about this.

You can still take it to an apple store if you have one near you. But yes, calling them works the same way. Hope you get the problem corrected.

I believe you have to double tap the caps lock key in order for it to come on. Have you tried this?

I don't think so. I'll have to try this tomorrow. Because if I put it in sleep and come back ten minutes later it will be fine. It's just when I put it to sleep and I return hours later to use the computer again that I start having the issues.

Not convinced the keyboard is the issue. Have you tried resetting the SMC/PRAM?

For the SMC:

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

For the PRAM:

Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
