After losing my iPhone 3G this is the information I found from Apple, AT&T and verifying it online

Note: Some people say they have gotten cheaper prices ( say for glass repair, stolen phones) but these are the prices without any discount. My iPhone was stolen and Apple did not give me any discounts

There are three price categories, if you have any questions let me know and I'll try and clarify them for you

*Squeezes iPhone tight in hand*

$500 is a lot for a replacement if I lose this one...gah. Thanks for the info. ;)

thanks - this does clarify some other posts where users were confused on signing a new 2 year agreement and still paying $399/$499...

very expensive to replace...but i would have too if needed...love that thing...

Why not buy out a new contract?

Maybe I've missed some change in ATT policy, but can't you still buyout your contract for $175 after 30 days? This decreases over time. If, say, you've been on ATT since getting a 3G in August, your buyout is down to about $140. Buyout plus new phone/contract is far less than some prices quoted!

(Title should say 'buy out old contract')

This is true, but you'll lose your phone number when you "cancel mobile" to buy out the contract. Also, new contract just after you've cancelled the last one should generate a new credit check to set up and activate on a new account... Not worth having to deal with a new phone number IMO, and a bit risky if your credit is poor... It'll be weeks/months before you see a deposit back (if there was one) and you'll likely have to lay down the same or larger for the new contract.

I managed to "water damage" my phone this week, but no one (AT&T in Nevada and Virginia, as well an Apple Store in Vegas as well as Virginia) agrees that the $499 (16GB) replacement with no extension in contract applies. If I want that price I have to agree to extension as an early upgrader or pay $699!

Not withstanding the typo's in the original table, I can verify after calling numerous AT&T stores and Apple Stores, that a full replacement due to Water Damage and not extending my current contract by 2 years was $699 for the 16GB.

Fortunately, our household insurance covered it (minus a $100 deductible) so I purchased a new 16GB phone at Apple Tysons VA. Originally they wanted me to renew for 2 years but my wife really hates AT&T coverage and the insurance paid full replacement, so I kept my existing contract. (I also want to keep my options open later this year with the next gen iPhone. I did need a replacement phone now though!)

Roll on iPhone and Verizon, one day our prayers will be answered :)

Just an FYI, for those with Computer coverage with USAA, check renewals, they're dropping PDA's etc from that plan due to, well, people like me dropping iPhones in toilets. :(
