So I have a two year old M1 iMac. We have two full profiles on there and cannot upgrade software as the memory is low. Is there a way to delete the admin and have the secondary user keep all their files (school work etc)

Why not backup the Mac, wipe the drive and then do a clean install of the OS you want to install? After you get done, you can decide which files and or accounts you wish to copy over. You have to have 1 admin account.

Are you certain the accounts are what's consuming the space you will need in order to do the upgrade?

Seems I recall reading it will take upwards of 45-65gb of "free space" for the upgrade to work on the latest OS. Sounds ridiculous, but may be true...

Ok so I’m deleting my profile form the Mac and it seems to be taking forever. Over an hour so far. Is that normal?
