Delete GMail emails

Hi,
So I've done a full reset of my iPhone in upgrading to iOS 5, I've set up my Gmail email and where as previously I could delete my mail, it now wants to archive it instead.

This puts the mail into the All Mail folder on GMail, which I don't want, I want to delete it for good.

Is there a way to change the behaviour of GMail emails on iOS 5 so that GMail email gets deleted rather than archived? I can't find a way to do it.

I'm also having this problem and it's annoying.

The "Archive Messages" option is turned off under settings, but when I delete emails on my 4S they still go to the All Mail folder, rather than the trash, when I go into Gmail on a computer.

This has never been a problem pre-iOS 5 with the other iPhones. I've tried switching the toggle on/off and have removed/re-added the Gmail account. I do not want to use the Gmail App and I do not want to set it up as an Exchange account.

I'm also having this problem and it's annoying.

There are others who say the iOS 4 way was a problem - no way to archive your messages on iOS.

Try this - select the messages and Move to trash instead of swiping to delete (archive).

I think setting up Gmail as exchange will delete instead of moving to archive. Plus, you'll get Push for incoming mail with exchange as a benefit.

Try Yahoo Mail. I have no problems with Yahoo.

I have archive turned off and when I swipe and select delete it moves it to the trash bin, not all mail. Something isn't set right if yours does not.

I have had problems on both my iPhone and iPad with Gmail and the delete message behavior. I wanted to move message to a different folder that was neither "All mail" nor "Trash". Even though I could set this up it would somehow always revert to sending messages to the trash folder (i.e. I would leave the setting page and "other folder" would be selected and when I would by the time I would go delete a message it would have reverted to "trash" and if I went back to the settings page the selection would also have reverted to "trash". I could never figure out why it was doing this. Happened with multiple accounts and on both devices though at separate times on each device (so it wasn't a Gmail web setting as far as I could tell). I eventually had to enable archive mail so that messages were not being sent to the trash and deleted after 30 days.

Go into settings > mail > Gmail > then turn OFF archive. This should now move items to trash.

Also, go to Settings > Mail > Gmail > Account > Advanced and select the folder you want to send deleted items to.

I am not 100% sure this will work or not. But give this method a try.

From iPhone.
Go into Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
1. Choose the Gmail acct.
2. Go into Account abc@gmail.com
Verify your gmail acct is filled in correctly
3. Go into Outgoing Mail Server.
SMTP>smtp.gmail.com
Primary Server>smtp.gmail.com (ON)
Verify Outgoing Mail Server information is filled in correctly
4. Go into Advanced
Mailbox Behaviors. Drafts Mailbox (Drafts) from Server, Deleted Mailbox
(Trash) from Server
5. Turn off Archive Messages
6. Once everything is seems finished. Select Done

Google Mail via webmail
1. Go into Account Settings
2. Go into Labels. Scroll down to "All Mail" and "Uncheck" Show in IMAP
3. Go into Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
Go to IMAP Access> When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted>
Auto-Expunge off.
When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible
IMAP folder>Move message into Trash or Immediately delete message
forever.
4. Save Changes

Once the whole process is done. Do a test both on the iphone and webmail.

After reading a Lifehacker post on using GMail on iOS, I have my GMail account linked on my 4S using Microsoft Exchange.
Anyway, if I click the trash icon while reading a message it'll do the same thing and archive instead of deleting it. But if I select the folders icon (while in the email's reading screen) and then select Trash, it will delete the email from my mailbox entirely.

Just read email using the gmail web interface. It's more powerful than the minimally-featured, built-in mail.app, and it's just as responsive. Not only do you get a choice of delete, archive, move, or label, but the searching is a bajillion times better.

I'm not using the gmail app, but was using the built in mail app with it set up through exchange.

I just tried this about 5 times with test emails, and they all moved straight to my All Mail Folder. Well not straight there. Within gmail it moves straight to all mail, however on my iPhone it moves to the trash folder, but the second i open up the trash folder it updates and that folder is empty. I check the All Mail folder and its there.

I have mine set up on exchange too

Yes, the auto archive is quite annoying...

I guess there's no possible way unless you set it up as Gmail account, but then you lose contacts, all the calendars, and push.

I'm not talking about the gmail app. I'm talking about the gmail mobile web interface, which is different than the regular gmail web interface.

While I use gmail via exchange (google sync) to get push, I actually read mail via the gmail mobile web interface:

It has more features (like delete OR archive), and it feels just as fast as the built-in mail.app. Also, as you read mail, the unread badge count on the built-in mail.app will auto-update after a minute or so. While it does, of course, need an internet connection to work, it's still scarily functional even in airplane mode, assuming that the page is still loaded in safari (i.e., does not need to be reloaded because some other tab flushed the other ones). The only real downside is that you have to re-login every 2-4 weeks or so.

I can hit the trash can icon while reading OR hit Edit in the list of emails view and have the option to delete a number of emails simultaneously there. I originally had the Archive option on a year or two ago, but since choosing to turn that OFF, I have been deleting, even with my 4s on iOS 5.

That only works with IMAP, which has fewer features than the exchange interface.

That's great and all, but I'm on a corporate google account for our company. I don't want to have to go through Safari for mail, and it won't notify you like the exchange mail setup will for calendar invites, new mail, etc.

I do use the exchange interface to get the various notifications and updates for mail, contacts, and calendars. However, I use the web interface for actually reading mail.

I prefer using the iOS mail app with Gmail configured as Exchange. Since selecting the "Trash" icon just moves the message to the "All Mail" folder, I have created a label (folder) at Gmail called "AA Trash" (AA so it will be at the top of folders) and move trash to that folder when using the iPhone. Later, when using my desktop mail app or when logged in via the web I can delete the stuff in there.

Really, though, emails hurt nothing just staying in the Inbox. All the emails I've ever gotten are still in my Inbox. Works great.

I guess you don't like organization?

That makes no sense though to be notified through exchange and then go read/file them in safari. I want one place, doing everything I need there.

The best idea I've heard yet is to create a folder for "Trash" and just move my stuff there on the phone and then delete once at computer, etc.

It's extremely organized. Chronological timeline of all emails received stored in the Inbox, smart mailboxes for receipts and things if I need, search is so easy that I can find anything I need regardless of where it is. I see no reason to remove them from the Inbox. It's extra work with no reward.
