When I click my hard drive in Finder, it shows a shortcut to some guides and an update log.. can i delete both of these?

It asks for me password, which seems strange. just wanted to check.

The guide linked to by the shortcut is just a harddisk copy of the guide that came with your Mac. I don't know about the update logs ... nothing in my Finder like that.

surely.

the MAU update log too?

This is just a manifesto that the Microsoft Automatic Updater leaves when it updates MS Office. I threw it in ~/Library in case I ever need it. :) You can delete it, but it takes up little to no space. To my knowledge, it isn't good for much, because, unlike a receipts file, it is not used to determine correct permissions or for uninstallation.

I deleted the link... and have made me a folder somewhere for all those Read Me's that get put wherever the updater/installer they originate from decides (but I have no idea where that folder is at the moment... except maybe a spotlight search away ;)).

Just for future reference, if ever you're unsure of whether a file can be deleted, drag it to the Trash without emptying and run for a week or so like that. If you don't notice any problems, then feel free to delete it.

Of course, this is a rule of thumb and it has to be adapted to individual files. So, in the case of a Microsoft file, you'd want to run all of your Microsoft apps at least once in that week. :)
