Maybe a dumb question: I bought an iMac recently but had to return it...

I also bought AppleCare via another retailer (boxed version, not auto activated)...
And I did not activate this yet (it's still sealed)

Now I'm wondering: can I keep it for my future iMac purchase (might be 9 months out for a possible iMac 2018) or will it expire if it's not activated in a certain timeframe?
