If you delete them on your phone, it lets you. But, if you reboot your phone, they re-install. During this re-install the iphone is stuck on the apple screen for several minutes, without telling you whats going on. Thought I had a brick.

Also, if you sync after deleting apps via the phone, they reinstall.

And, its worse if you delete on the phone, then sync(without a reboot). My phones been stuck for more than 10 minutes now, at the Apple screen. Going to do a full reset, and see what happens next.

I'm guessing the best way to delete apps, is via itunes, select install just some, do a sync to get them off the phone(hopefully), then delete the apps in itunes. But, that's just a guess, since I'm stuck for a while.

What in the world are you talking about buddy?

I don't have any issues with this at all. I delete my apps by pressing and holding down the icon of the app I want to delete, then it shows the icons "wiggling" and a little "x" next to the app. Press the "x", and the app is gone.

When i reboot my phone, shut it off, whatever.... the app does not re-install itself. I think this is something with your phone specifically.

You may want to try restoring your iphone using the newest software again.

But when you reconnect your iPhone to iTunes, and sync (provided you have sync apps checked), does it not reinstall the app?

I think that the easiest way is to selectively pick the apps you want installed on your iPhone. Then when you sync, they will be installed. And if accidentally deleted, they will be automatically reinstalled when you sync the next time.

I don't have a iPhone yet, but do have a Touch, which I think operates the same when connecting to iTunes.

If i download an app, then delete it before i sync... no it will not reinstall the app.

If i download an app, then tell itunes to back up EVERYTHING including apps, then delete the app from the phone, and THEN re-sync with itunes.... umm, OF COURSE it's going to reinstall the apps lol.

This isn't a problem at all, you have the ability to uncheck the apps you want / don't want installed.

I don't have any issues with this, that's all i can say.

If i install an app, and delete it, it's gone. If i reboot, its still gone. If i sync, it's still gone. if I reboot after syncing, it's still gone.

If i sync my apps i currently have, then delete it, and then connect to itunes again, yes there's a good chance it will reinstall the app, but that's because the last sync had the app on there. If i delete the app WHILE sync'd up, then it won't happen ever again.

It's supposed to work this way.

That makes the bug worse, not better. There is NO doubt what happened to my phone, the delete/reboot/reinstall thing. So, its intermittent, much tougher to fix.

My phone: It wasn't recovering while connected to my iMac, half an hour+ with the black apple logo screen. So, I reset the phone(both keys). Hooked it up, then deleted the apps via iTunes(like we've all described above). Its OK now.

I haven't tried the same steps to repeat, and really don't care if it does/doesn't work properly. Just thought I'd pass along the info, in case someone else briefly thought their phone was bricked.

For the record, my iPhone 3G does the same thing. If I delete the application on the phone it will come back again when I re-sync.

The only way I can avoid it is by manually selecting the applications to sync (after deleting from the phone).

When I reboot the phone, apps sometimes reappear. Other times they don't.

you're talking about a completely different issue.

I don't understand why you guys can't comprehend what's happening.

On your last sync, you have essentially told itunes to back up your entire phone, including your apps. So unless you delete it from itunes, OF COURSE it's still going to put it back on. lol!

There's your answer...
Find software that was used to upload the apps and go from there.

Yes, it is hard for some of us to understand. Would you please explain how one can delete an app from itunes.:):):)

Go into the applications sidebar and delete the app.

If I uncheck "Sync Applications" in iTunes. Will it let me manage my apps entirely from the iPhone? Because that's what I want. I'm afraid to uncheck it though because it says its going to delete all my apps...

It will not delete your apps if you decide to uncheck that Sync Applications box. Your apps will remain and you can manage them on your phone.

Except if you've ever used a smartphone before, you'd never expect that to happen. I've deleted items on Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices, and the sync software maintained a backup of the application but did not add it back in after a sync. It assumed if I removed the program, I wanted the damn program gone for a reason.

Knowing that iTunes doesn't do this is fine, as there are plenty of workarounds, but it's frustrating if you don't realize it, since it's not the most intuitive result.

apps grayed out in itunes?

The iphone is great. Almost everything is working... but I've downloaded some fun things from iTunes, and they won't install on the phone. If I go into itunes on the phone, I can install - but it's a pain to find something while I'm browsering around on my computer and then have to run to the phone to search for it.

Oh jeez. You're right. How dare I assume the iPhone would act like a normal ****ing smartphone. I must have been incredibly dumb to assume that iTunes wouldn't reinstall items I purposely deleted.

There's plenty of whining about random **** on these boards, but the way iTunes handles backups of apps is a flaw in the system. It doesn't take away from the iPhone, but it is a flaw. Amazingly, not everything in life is perfect, and it doesn't make anyone a hater for recognizing that.
