I recently updated to Big Sur on my 2018 MBA. I am having trouble deleting emails in Mail. Previously (and on my 2017 iMac still running Mojave), if I was reading an email and was finished with it, I could hit the Delete key on my keyboard, and the email would close out and delete the message, taking my back to my inbox in one fell swoop. Alternatively, I could hit delete on my keyboard from the inbox list and the message would delete.

I now have to click cmmd-delete for this to work. If I click delete by itself, then the message reappears back in my inbox.

My keyboard seems to be mapped this way.

If I go to the Help menu under Mail and search for how to delete an email, I see this dialogue:

For some reason I believe that my delete key is mapped to the option for opt-delete. Clicking opt-delete for me uses the normal delete behavior.

How can I switch these? I tried using the shortcuts option through Keyboard Preferences, but either I'm doing it incorrectly or it isn't allowing me because I just get an error noise.

Thanks.

If you hit cmd+del it deletes the message entirely.
If you hit del, it puts it in the bin.
Could it be that it's actually in the bin which is why it seems to pop up again?
I've seen the same thing and that's what it is for me when I look closely.

No, I have definitely experimented and the message comes back to inbox. If I hit delete a second time then it will stay deleted from inbox. But the basic behavior of the delete key for me is mapped to what opt-delete is supposed to do.
