Deleting everything

Hello,

My powerbook is currently running 10.3.9, and I want to upgrade to Tiger. However, other than my photos and my music, I want my mac to be just like it was when I initially bought it, except of course, with Tiger installed. My mac came with panther preinstalled and I have tiger on disc.

My issues are:
What happens to the iLife software on my mac, because my mac came with them preinstalled, and I don’t think that I have a disc for them, are they on the tiger disc?

Similarly with all the other apps that came preinstalled such as stuffit expander, things that unzip stuff etc etc…are these also on the tiger disc?

I am buying an external hard disc to put my music and photo’s onto, anything else I should do?

Any precautions I should take?

Anyway that I could also secure delete the old stuff, so its not lying around on the disc waiting to be overwritten?

i think if you upgrade you keep the iLife 04/05 if you wipe your disk tyou get nothing apart from the OS 10.4

Pacifist might help you out if you have just the restore CD's from the powerbook

but please please please BACKUP all your FILES before you wipe anything

iLife and all of the applications that came on your computer are on the restore disk that came with your computer. iLife is NOT on the Tiger disks. Stuffit is a free download so I wouldn't worry to much about that.

You can reinstall iLife (and Classic and whatever else came with the PowerBook) using the restore CDs without using Pacifist or such: You just need to do something like this. (Just remember your restore disk might be slightly different, as they've changes according to the system they follow.)

What i mean is that if i look in applications, there are loads of things that aren't part of ilife but that have always been on my powerbook, will these still be there when i upgrade?

Also, so what is the order of things? since surfing the apple support site im a little lost, if i do what it says here:

1 Back up your essential files.
2 Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer.
3 Double-click "Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software."
4 Follow the onscreen instructions until you get to the destination pane.
5 In the "Select a destination" window, click Options, then click "Erase and Install."

i'll just end up up with a fresh copy of panther, but i want to put tiger on.

Is there also an option to totally erase the info so that it is actually deleted, not waiting to be overwritten?

After backing up, and performing a clean install of Tiger, then you pop in the old Panther restore disk, but do not do a restore all (or what it's called) just choose what you want to restore (iLife, Classic or whatever).

OK this seems do-able, is there anywhere that says what are the exact differences between what will be on my restore disc and what will be installed with tiger, i know that I will have a copy of Office test drive, but what about other things? Also, will all the utilities be included on the tiger disc?

You can install iLife using your restore CD's without having to install panther. So no problem. However, I would say it is worth it to buy iLife 06. iPhoto, and iMovie HD are so much better than (probably iLife 04, which you probably have)

I'm actually doing the same exact thing this afternoon. Installing 10.4 and deleting everything. I just backed up all my mp3's and pictures and important documents (I hope I got them all) and I think thats all I need to do.
I've never done this, but I'm not anticipating it to be overly difficult.
