Hi everyone. I'm new here and would really appreciate some advice. I'm a PC man and know little about Apple architecture.

I bought a new iPad for my wife this Christmas. It replaces her old iPad of 5 years ago. I did the standard file copy from the old to the new. It was very slick. Hats off to Apple for making it so simple!

I want to start deleting files from the old one so I can give it to my granddaughter but every file I delete from the old one gets deleted from the new one. As far as I know, each iPad has its own Apple ID. The iCloud function is turned off on both iPads.

For example, I took a test picture with the old one and it showed up on the new one. I deleted the pic from the old one and it was deleted from the new one. The two iPads are hopelessly linked.

How do I delete files from the old one so the new one remains independent? Many thanks.

It sounds like both iPads are, in fact, logged into the same Apple ID. You can check this by going to Settings and at the top of that screen will show the Apple ID.

The easiest way to erase an iPad is to go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Doing it this way won't affect the other iPad even when the same Apple ID is used.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll check the IDs. I may be in error. You're probably right! I'll post back. Many thanks!

Hi again, Namara. Both iPads are using the same ID. I suppose I should change the old one to a different ID? Thanks.

You don't need to change the Apple ID on the old iPad to erase it. Will you be using it in your household or will you be selling/trading it in?

Well, I tried changing to a different ID but I'm totally lost!

It will be handed down to my granddaughter, so essentially keeping it.

I recommend that you use the erase steps noted above, and then leave it for your granddaughter to log in with her own Apple ID.

To answer your specific question about changing Apple IDs, you have to sign out of the first one, and then it will prompt you to enter the new one. You sign out by going to Settings > Apple ID > scroll to the bottom to see Sign Out.

Okay thanks, Namara.

I just completed a backup of the new iPad > my PC through iTunes. I should be able to do a reset of the old one with no effect on the new one, and then add my granddaughter's new email address to the old one as her Apple ID, as per your idea? That way, both iPads have their own distinct ID and are totally independent. Sound good?

It worked, Ericwn and Namara.

I did a reset of the old iPad and will need to create a new ID for it. Meanwhile, the new iPad is backed up on my PC and fully functional with no missing files that I can see.

Many thanks for the great assistance. I hope I can return the favor someday :)!
