Deleting photos doesn't work

Running IOS 14X on my iPhone 11 and I want to delete a bunch of photos in the Photos app. I can select the photos I want to delete, but the little trash can at the bottom right of the screen is grayed out, and I can't delete anything. Is this a known problem, or am I trying to do it wrong?

Which troubleshooting steps have you tried so far? Reboot your phone? Reset all settings?

I did reboot the phone and I seem to be able to delete a number of photos, but not...screenshots. I am reluctant to "reset all settings" because it is a pain in the ass to reestablish all the settings that evaporates.

Did you take the photos on your phone?

if they are synced through your computer that would be why you can’t delete them.

Try taking a fresh screenshot and see what happens.

How do you sync your photos with your Mac? the fact that you can't delete really suggests they are synced from another device. I would connect your iPhone to your Mac and verify you are not syncing any photos.

I'm not syncing photos from my iPhone to my iMac. I just checked to make sure.
