Any recent info as to how to delid CPUs for cMP?

I have a 4,1 2x 8core and a 5,1 (recently upgraded to 6core).
I'll be migrating all my data to the 5,1 shortly so then the 4,1 will be a "spare / tinkerer".

I've watched a few videos how to delid using the vice method: one side of the vice is the CPU and the other side is the heat sink.

So once I have the thing off how do I clean up the residue and polish the top?

I have upgraded the 5,1 from 4 core to 6 core OK and fixed the northbridge heatsink on the 4,1.

Tim cleaner or rubbing alcohol to clean.

Polish what exactly?

He would be thinking the newly exposed cpu core needing to be polished. Personally from past experience doing it with PCs the theory that you get cooler temps from having done it is pure BS. You get the vast majority of the reduction in temps from the lid being removed, that final .1, .2, .3 of a degree is a rounding error on the measurement being done if you actually get to see any real difference when you do it.

most people dont de'lid for 4.1 they just use spacers (washers)

do a search there's lots of posts on it or look at PC forums as it's the same in general.

i think it's more needed if your going to be ruining a 24/7 high OC where you need the extra thermal room.

There will be rough, uneven solder on top that needs to be scraped off. I used a metal window scraper but I've heard from others that the solder is so soft you can use a plastic scraper.

Be careful. ;)

Thanks for the tips.

I’ll pick up some low end quad cores and use the for practice first before I get mid range hex cores.
