Just got my Dell 2005FPW screen. Yea baby! I bought it without reading all of the happy mac hype around this monitor. The gods were with me :D

I've got a G4 (Tiger + 1GB RAM are on the way) and need a new graphics card to handle the 1680 x 1050 16:9 rez. I'm pretty sure from what I've read that the Radeon 9200 will NOT support this wide screen resolution. The Radeon 9600 looks like it will do it, but I'd like some confirmation from someone who's done it with a G4 before I shell out the $200 clams on the 9600. I've seen a bunch of posts point to theses cards as potential winners, but I don't think I've seen someone claim that it's really possible. So my questions:

1) Has anyone successfully used the Radeon 9200 and been able to get the 1680 x 1050 or higher 16:9 rez?

2) Has anyone successfully used the Radeon 9600 to do the same?

Thanks you guys. Appreciate it!

I was worried that my 8500 64MB would not handle the top ws res of my monitor, but as it turns out everything was fine.

Just make sure you have the latest card drivers.
Im almost certain that the cards you mentioned will will work fine.

A Radeon 9200 can run at that resolution just fine. Hell, a Rage 128 16mb card can run it just fine too. The only advantage of the Radeon 9600 would be

1.) Faster framerates in games
2.) Pixel Shader 2.0 support for Core Image

If gaming and a fancy ripple effect are of no importance to you, and you're on a tight budget, then just go for the Radeon 9200. Though I don't think ATI has ever put out a retail Radeon 9200 AGP card, only a PCI version, which you should avoid.

Also, it would help to know what kind of G4 you have. Some of the older pre "Digital Audio" models (350mhz - 450mhz or so) don't have AGP 4x support, only 2x, and the 9600 isn't keyed for 2x AGP slot.

Without a question.

The Radeon 9200 Mobility in my iBook can do higher resolutions than that.

The 9600 will obviously be faster for games and what-not, though.

Thanks!

I was on the edge of laying down an couple hundred bux for the upgraded card, but you guys pulled me back. Thanks! I dug back into my current hardware list fired up Google and *stumbled* upon the updated drivers that allows me to get 1680 x 1050.

I've got a G4 867MHz running 10.2.8 with an Nvidia GeForce2 MX (32MB).

I found a driver update here:

I'm cookin with gas now! Thanks for your help.
