Well, I took the save some money route and got burned.

My Dell 2407WFP has the infamous banding issue. It is very very annoying. What makes it even worse is that I bought it on eBay so my only real option is to try to get Dell to exchange it. This really sucks.

I should have bought the damn ACD.

Well how much money did you get it for? And sorry, I am not fimiliar with the problem you are having. I probably can't help, but I am curious what it is, because I am in the market for one of those myself.

 I haven't heard of the banding issue. I have that monitor and it works very nicely. Is it a random problem with some? If so, I'd give the creep who sold it to you some very bad feedback for not saying it had a problem (if you can't return it). Anyone know Ebay's legal policies on returning faulty stuff?

It is a very common problem. Just about every 2407WFP has it.

Make a gradient in photoshop, chances are the transition wont be smooth, you will see little bands.

Sort of like this. http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/26/2007wfp-experiencing-severe-banding-on-gradients/

This has been all over just about every PC forum, as well as Dell's forums.

This isnt the fault of the seller, he sold me a brand new item. I was just hoping Dell has fixed the issue.

I paid $660 for it, which was a savings of $300 over the 23" ACD.

If i recall correctly the banding issue can be fixed with a display driver on DELL's site. I remember the 2007WFP having the same issue and people complained to Dell about the issue. I recommend a Google search something like, "Dell 2407WFP banding". you might get the answer you were looking for.

I am pretty sure no driver can fix this. It is a firmware issue. They claimed to have fixed it in the Desktop mode, however it is still visible there as well.

It's been a great monitor for me. I have never noticed anything like that. It's probably heresy, but I would compare these monitors to ACDs as the quality is very high. Mine is the previous model (round base - 2405FPW). Maybe they're hit and miss or something. Either that or I'll notice it tomorrow and never be able to ignore it again... ;)

I have the previous model as well, and it works perfectly. I use ACDs at work, and I would say that the quality of my dell is better than that of the ACDs. My dells brightness is even from edge to edge, the ACDs on the other hand have falloff around the edges, on both the 20 and 23's.

What revision do you have? My A02 or whatever revision is fine as far as I can tell.

I just bought two of these monitors new from dell a few weeks ago and have been very impressed. I've not noticed any banding, and watching DVDs and working in Aperture have been absolutely stunning. I'm sorry to hear that your monitor is having so much trouble. I would certainly try contacting Dell. As popular as this monitor is getting, my guess is that there'll be a firmware upgrade soon, if not already.

If its an A2 it should be fine, because that mean that they flashed the firmware.

I got one of the first ones (the 2007FWP, but the 2407 and 2007 were being dealt with the same way on the dell forums)and had to go thru the replacement process via the Dell forums. I am happy with the A02.

You are going to have to get the seller to sign a transfer of ownership form before Dell will replace this or honor the warranty.

Dell 2407WFP here with no issues. best monitor i have owned to date. replaced a 22" ACD, which replaced a SGI 1600SW.

no banding, bright, even light edge to edge, good price. still lust after the AL look of the ACD though...

The 2405fpw (what I have) and the 2407fpw are completely different monitors with different panels. The 2407fpw uses a cheaper panel with lower refresh rates. The banding is a very big problem but its only on the DVI connector. If you hook it up with vga its gone so I hear.

Oh man, the 1600SW was THE monitor back in the day. I still wish they made LCDs that were that high a resolution in 17.3"

A good SGI story: I bought my 1600SW used on ebay. About a month after getting it, a line of pixels died, leaving me a big red stripe down the screen. I called SGI, not only did they warranty it, they UPS Red overnight shipped me a brand new one, and I returned the old one in the shipping box, and, get this, I didnt have to give them ANY creditcard info even. I called 6PM EST, and had a new screen 915AM EST the next day.

Now THAT is customer service!

The last I checked this - back in about May - there is a firmware fix, but you have to send the monitor to back to dell or a dell service center. I'd imagine that the monitor you bought off ebay had been in the sellers possession (or had been changing hands) since before those with updated firmware started shipping. It should be pretty easy- call Dell, tell them that you are having banding issues on the monitor, and they should tell you what to do next...

Some of you are commenting saying your 2405 is great. That is in fact correct, those monitors didnt exhibit this problem.

However the 2407, this problem is alive and well. And has not been eliminated. They did flash the firmware, however all that did was disable to faroja chipset in the desktop mode. If you switch to gaming or multimedia modes, you will see horrible gradient banding.

I urge those of you with the 2407 to make a gradient in photoshop. Make sure you compare it to another monitor and you will see the problem.

It is a great monitor however my job deals with graphics and there is no way I can stand working in my apps with this problem.

I am going to contact Dell and see what I can do, there is supposedly an A03 revision floating around.

Yeah but I still see banding...

FYI: Dell has the crappiest automated assistant.

Well. I found out the guy on eBay bought it with a system. So I couldnt transfer the warranty or get anyone to exchange. He is going to give me a full refund(including shipping). So this is pretty great.

Apparently there is a new revision (A03) which actually fixes this issue. I dont know if I am going to take my chances on this again. Anyone have any other 24" recommendations?

Samsung 244T, same panel, never has had any of the dell's issues, and better color than the a03 anyways.

Yeah I have been thinking about that one. I would get it in Silver, how does it compare to the 23" ACD?

I will do some more research on it. There is an Acer and a new BenQ on the way, but I have most assuredely learned that cheap isnt the best route in all cases. But niether is the most expensive sometimes...

It's a good display. It's not much more than the dell anyways, if you look on froogle you can get it for 769.

Acer, I dono, their last 24" was crap, I don't think samsung has made a bad lcd, they make the panels in all of the good lcds out there.

It looks good, although I must say I find it strange that the side USB ports cable is on the side as well.

I like the fact that it has other inputs though. That is nice.
