dell E1505 Dual Core

sale today on dell core duo 15.4 in. i am currently using a 15 powerbook. dell is selling it for $700. isnt this the core duo everyone is talking about in the macbook pro. thinking about picking it up. too bad its windows.
 
If it is the Core Duo (as opposed to a Pentium M or Celeron M or something) then you should be aware that there's much more to a laptop than a processor - not to mention your observation of the operating system and not forgetting all that software like iLife and FrontRow that comes free with a Mac.

I'm thinking build quality, quality of internal components, design, materials, quality of aftercare...

...cheap is all well and good, but it's cheap. Don't spend $700 expecting a MBP.

Even if that's the case, the MBP is 3x more expensive than the Dell, you can keep yourself on the bleeding edge by simply throwing the damned thing into the trash each time it fails (even if it is still on warranty!) and pobably still come out ahead compared to the Mac user who has to keep using that same old laptop for like 5 years.

Your choice really.

I love my Apple computers, but with all of the complaints about problems with the MBP I don't think that the word 'quality' would exactly come to mind, except in the bad sense. Sure, the Dell is cheap, but it also comes with a no-questions-asked return policy that Apple can't even come close to.

Right, Dell return policy is way better than Apple's. Maybe because Macs are too expensive that Apple can't afford returns.

Actually even you know deep inside that's bull. Apple routinely takes back computers at 10% restocking and sells them at a 10% discounted refurbished price. Students routinely buy computers at ~ 7% discounted prices. Staff buys Macs at (some say) 25% restocking prices. The Mac in question here costs ~ 300% more than the Dell. If you ask me, Apple has a lot more leeway than Dell when it comes to pricing their computers...
 
You can add $179 more for Radeon X1400 256MB and $25 more for integrated Audigy. Still prices in at just about $900. Very good deal!
 
I have been looking at this Dell and I have searched for information about Dell durability and it is almost non-existant. Dell seems to have huge quality related problems these days, but if you don't care about them and you only want bleeding edge speed, then I guess Dell is a good choice.

Now, about Apple computers. Well, I don't think all Macs are a *high quality hardware* but Apple not the worst. My 2 computers simply run to hot to last for some time and the fans are not quiet. Apple should have invested in a better cooling system to be considered high quality producer IMO. My other mac has had its logic board replaced under warranty for example.

I'm now in a market for a reliable and maybe nice looking laptop for my wife. I have high expectations about the Macbook since it is manufactured by Asus and the processor doesn't run very hot. But I cannot wait for much longer, so I hope it will be released today. Ibook is nice, but my wife needs Windows this time.

The highest quality producer out there has been IBM and maybe Lenovo hasn't made the Thinkpads second class computers. Too bad they are more expensive than the others. :p

Build quality and quality of internal components?? From when did the core duo inside a dell become inferior to that of the MBPs?? The internal components are pretty much the same!

Build quality?? With all the whine and flickering and what not...Dont think Apple has been on par with quality these days.

Design, I agree Apple is far superior.

Materials, hmmm Aluminium is nicer but dents easier, dissipates heat, less durable in my opinion...

I understand where you are coming from but when I pay 2000 for an MBP, I expect it to be good, though it doesnt seem to be the case with apple. On the other hand, you pay 700 for a DELL but the performance is near that of the MBP.

Please don't put words in my mouth, I never said that a core duo inside a dell is inferior to one inside an Apple :rolleyes: . I've had a lot of Dells, so am simply speaking from my own experience.
