Just read on Engadget about the new Dell 10" Mini Netbook that's convertible into a tablet. Now, I know it's not the most elegant thing, but I was wondering if Apple might go a similar route on the new MacBook Air. Get the touchscreen surface going and make it the first Touch Screen OSX Machine, the way the Air was the first Unibody and the first SSD machine.

Use the Air to be a bridge device into a touchscreen OS. Apple does have that patent about the touchscreen OS activating with a tilt of the screen for the iMac... so this is not far off.

Not necessarily something I think *will* happen, but more along the lines of "It'd be neat if it did happen."

Well,

To me, it doesn't show anything about Apple at all.

It does reinforce how crappy Dell's ideas have become though.

Every once in a while a product comes along that makes you say, "Brilliant! Why didn't someone think of this sooner? I gotta have it!"

This is not one of those times.

The Dell's bezel is even more enormous than the Airs's. Unbearable trend away from practicaility. I just saw somebody in a cafe with the 10 year old titanium Powerbook that has nearly no bezel at all. Now that was what a laptop should be, entirely without any crazy design ideas like glass or black frames around the LCD or other crap that Apple introduced later - it's really been a constant path downhill since then. And even the optical drive was useful at the time!

I do think we will be able to run iOS in a shell somehow on OS X, but I think it's a few years away. I see it as running in an LCD trackpad, allowing us to "touch" what we want to do within OS X too. It would be great because we wouldn't have to reach up, and put our fingerprints, on our Mac's display.

Agreed.
After buying a $6,000 Dell workstation that wasn't even tested for compatibility by Dell before they sold it, I will never buy another Dell product for the foreseeable future.

The thing is too bulky to be useful. This idea is just a rehash of the old windows tablets that had a 180 rotatable screen.
It's all a marketing gimmick.

Even a high quality brand like Toshiba has had trouble getting MS tablets to work right. Dell? You might want to lookup what they did to get into the newspapers in 2010.
