It's either that the monitor doesn't play well with Macs or it's user error (maybe don't use an HDMI cable?).

My work laptop is a Dell Latitude 7490. Nothing special. I bought 3 Dell P2419H monitors a few months back on Amazon (for work from home). When I'm using the work laptop (HDMI from the laptop to one monitor; HDMI into a docking station for the other), the resolution is great. Crystal clear. When I use my new 2020 Mac Mini (connected directly to the first monitor via HDMI), it's definitely pixelated and somewhat blurred (on all 3 monitors; including the menu bar). I've tried changing the settings on the display. I've tried the whole scaling thing on the Mac (made it worse). Where I'm at now is that I've left it at "default" on the Mac and left everything else the same, too. I mainly use the two monitors for work, so... it's not the end of the world (I mean... it displays and all). I just can't understand why Windows looks so clear/crisp, but the Mac looks like it's running on a monitor from the 90s.

I still have time to return the 3rd monitor (window ends early August). Do you think it's the monitor itself and that... I should go with a different model (if so... ideas?) or do you think it's an HDMI thing and how Mac works with it? Keep in mind, I'm complete ignorant. So... entirely possible that it's me.

In case you're curious, here's how I use the screens:

  • Weekdays
    • Left monitor is the Mac. Middle/right monitors are Windows.
  • Weekends
    • All three monitors display the Mac
      • Left via direct HDMI connection
      • Middle by simply unplugging from the work laptop and into the Mini (adapters)
      • Right by using an HDMI switch (from 1 to 2)
Sorry for the lengthy post. Just curious what it might be. Should I try a USB-C to DisplayPort cable?

Thanks
