I posted this in another thread, but seeing as it concerns the much-disliked Apple competitor (the one whose founder and CEO infamously stated that he'd liquidate Apple to return what little value he could to shareholders back in the late 90s), I figured it deserves its own thread:

Dell Profit Plunges 48%

Dell has made some serious mistakes in the past few years. It's reflected both in their public image and in their sales and profits.

People, in today's economy, are expecting more when they make a computer purchase.

Dell's crappy over-seas customer service doesn't quite cut it anymore. People are buying HP or investing the extra money to buy a Mac...
Which kinda goes against the other argument, like many in this thread have posited, that people just buy cheaper in a crappy economy and thus are avoiding Macs...

You know, maybe the best thing Michael Dell could do is just take the cash they have and give it back to the shareholders. :D

Well since the only 2 computers I buy are either Macs or Thinkpads, I don't see the issue here.

It's amazing that they're making a profit at all.

I just bought two Vostro 220 desktops from them for $550 each, landed.

Specs were:
2.8GHz Core 2 Duo
3GB DDR2-800
500GB Hard Drive
DVD-RW
256mb ATI 3450
22" S2209 LCD monitor

I just got both machines today and they are awesome little things for the price. Quiet and cool, and fast enough to do most things.

Or maybe that just goes to show just how over priced Apple computers really are.

In before the retarded apple fanboy says "they arent overpriced if apple is selling them"

I've resorted to calling them 'exorbitantly priced' because it cant be argued and most hardcore fanboys are too stupid to know what it means.

Heh. I couldn't build a computer for $325 with those specs, and then bundle it with a $200 monitor...

And here is the shocker: The computers actually aren't half bad for that price.

"No escape from Reality...”
^^^ LOL...

BTW, work just got me an E4300 (13" WS laptop) and has the same specs (with the Intel Graphics instead of nVidia) as the middle MacBook with the exception of an 80 Gig drive instead of the 160...

The Dell is $200 more ($1,495).

So much for Dell being "cheaper" than a Mac...

I'm sure you can cherry-pick models to show there's Dell machines that are more expensive than similar Apple computers, but I don't think anyone can seriously argue that in general, Dell (and most of their PC cousins) aren't cheaper than Macs.

At least in terms of retail price for initial setups.

(Yes, there's all those other arguments like OS update frequency and pricing, AV protection, obsolescence, etc but for the purpose of this discussion I'm not digging that deep.)

Article implies they will be laying people off to reduce their costs.

Well then, on that note, I'm very sorry to hear the news.

As much as I hate Dell machines, I just cant bring myself to hate employees, why could anyone?

I've would've gladly taken the Mac and Bootcamp into Windows XP...
