Dell U2715H and Sierra - cannot get 2560X1440 via DHMI

I have had this problem too. it's driving me mad. and it isn't getting fixed. Using a thunderbolt dock, I can go to a second monitor with hdmi at the correct resolution no problem. tried all manner of fixes. pram reset. smc reset. monitor rest. cable swaps.
I also own this monitor and use an rMBP 2012 15". Have you tried the miniDP? Is that also broken?
Odd thing I was experiencing via HDMI was that I was getting a mirroring menu bar pull down which seemed to, from the options, imply the macOS was seeing my monitor as its own, secondary display. 
Nothing changed no matter what I selected but when I switched to DVI-D the menu item disappeared.

Same with an Acer G257HU. I filed a bug report with Apple and sent along a requested sysdiagnose dump. We will see if it gets resolved before the GM...
been filing bug reports for every beta, also been doing smc and pram resets after each beta. no change as of pb7

I believe I'm having a related issue.
I'm running a 4K ASUS PB278Q monitor on Sierra GM 1 connecting to my MacBook Pro via the Thunderbolt port.
Booting from El Capitan on an external drive, OS X gives me a series of really convenient scaled HiDPI resolution options from 1920x1080 right up to 3840x2160, but in Sierra they're gone (see pic).
The same thing happens when I re-route the display through my thunderbolt dock.
SwitchResX won't work for me in Sierra because the latest version fails to load the Daemon that would allow me to use custom resolutions.

good news - I've been in touch with Tim Cook's office a few times about this issue, and they got me in touch with some other people, and long story short I was just told last night that there will be another release (they didn't say if it would be before or after the GM was released, just that I would be notified so I could test it as well) that will definitely restore scaling to its former utility.

But manually entering 2560x1440 as a scaling resolution doesn't work - the machine doesn't take it and it lists an error next to the resolution on reboot. It will switch to that resolution without scaling, of course, and it looks horrible. Display Menu does the same thing.
Oddly I was able to get that scaling resolution when not in clamshell mode, but it was damned tricky and difficult to repeat. It also put the laptop display into a weird state. Not at all practical.

You guys tried using the evaluation version of SwitchResX? The latest version, v.4.6 is up at

Just upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra and having this exact same issue. Use a LG IPS WQHD external monitor connected via HDMI. Was able to do 2560x1440 in El Capitan but now my best option is 1080p.
Is it working for anyone if you use DisplayPorts? I.e. if I used that with Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to an adapter to my display?

I was so annoyed with this problem - can't believe Apple shipped an update that cause all of our nice monitors to become useless.
Looks like HDMI is the issue because this cable just came in and now I'm back to the regular resolution.
